I came across this film when I met one of the co-stars. It looks like an interesting movie and I will see it whenever it comes to a local indie theater here.

After three years in prison, macho Enrique (Esai Morales) returns home to the Bronx and finds things changed. His wife, Angela (Judy Reyes), is distant, and his teenage son, Michael, has come out as Vanessa, a transgender woman. Unable to accept his child for who she is now, Enrique clings to his masculine ideals while Angela attempts to hold the family together by fiercely protecting Vanessa. Still under the watchful eye of his parole officer, Enrique must become the father he needs to be or, once again, risk losing his family and freedom.
The heart of Gun Hill Road lies in two places: a father’s inability to escape the vicious cycle of his life, and the richly drawn character of Michael/Vanessa (newcomer Harmony Santana is unforgettable). Writer/director Rashaad Ernesto Green’s first feature film is a complex family drama, told with gentle humor, sensitivity, and a deep understanding of the environment that defines its inhabitants.

Looks like a good movie. Its real issue society must face, but it's all handled on an individual level. Thanks for the heads up.

I think Freddie made a cameo if I'm not mistaken. He's the dark skinned dude talkin' to the young Trans Woman !! He like the father appearently can't deal with the situation !! LMAO

Just kiddin'....looks like a powerful flick, and worth a look.. but I know how the dude feels. I went back to Gun Hill Road after 15 years and found things changed too !!

There is an interview with Harmony Santana and a general article about transgendered actors in today's New York Times

I just wanna say that this article failed to mention a transwoman who is just as much as an accomplished actress.

A fair point if lost on me as I have not seen the programme and if its shown here in the UK its probably on satellite. To be fair to the NYT article they can't cover everyone, but as Greys Anatomy seems to have been quite well-received over there it is an oversight on the paper's part. Makes one wonder how many transgendered people have small, walk-on roles in programmes that don't get much coverage...typically, I regret to say, usually a cop show...

the parent as jerk is the premise of the movie.
The dad is out of prison and is typical homophobic latino mentality. but the kind of guilt he puts on his kid can come from any culture or ethnicity.
