I discovered this morning that one of my favourite songs, Madame George by Van Morrison, is not about a ts in Los Angeles -ok so I know there is a song called Cyprus Avenue on Astral Weeks, but for some reason I thought he was talking about Cypress Avenue in Los Angeles; and yes even though he talks about taking the train from Dublin to Sandy Row (in Belfast). It turns out he originally called the song Madame Joy, it slurred into George he doesn't know why (drunk? stoned?) and the woman is an amalgam of various people. The song was important to me because I first heard it in a chateau in Aix-en-Provence one tempting summer when Nixon was in the White House and even Mao was still alive...ah well -however

The two songs I know that do feature Ts/Tv are:
Lola, by the Kinks (1970)
Take a Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed (1972)

Must have been many since -I can't stand Madonna so I don't know if she did it but it wouldn't surprise me...

Neil Young did a whole album in the 80s called Trans..... but as it consists almost entirely of feedback, somehow I doubt that he had tgirls in mind.

"Jacky" by Scott Walker, or even better the original in French by Jacques Brel.

The lyrics are elliptical and enigmatic, but they certainly can be interpreted as the singer having flirted with cross-dressing.

I guess this song can be taken as a young gay boy or club kid, but the english version of Jet Boy Jet Girl would be up there.

I've heard it mentioned a few times that Ray Davies penned a 4th verse for Lola that was performed informally. Anyone ever hear of it or know the lyrics?

Astonishing that having listened to all of the Beatles albums as they came out I never registered either OblaDiOblaDa or Get Back with cross-dressing, I wonder how much else I missed, but these days I can't bear the sound of the fab four, so I will let it rest as words.

RLS: Definitely not Brel; a friend of mine recently wrote a paper on Brel and Brassens, I was referring to something called 'Rap' and its derivatives.

Funky Cold Medina

Ton Loc

While the entire song doesnt talk about transsexuals he does sing about a funny encounter with one in the 3rd Verse

I went up to this girl, she said, Hi, my name is Sheena
I thought she'd be good to go with a little Funky Cold Medina
She said, I'd like a drink, I said, Ehm - ok, I'll go get it
Then a couple sips she cold licked her lips, and I knew that she was with it
So I took her to my crib, and everything went well as planned
But when she got undressed, it was a big old mess, Sheena was a man
So I threw him out, I don't fool around with no Oscar Meyer wiener
You must be sure that the girl is pure for the Funky Cold Medina

Here you go. This one is from The Who. It's called "I'm a Boy." It predates "Lola," in terms of being a transgender song (I think it was recorded in 66'). AND it's the only song I know of that is about forced feminization. Come on guys, I know there are at least a few of you out there who get into forced feminization. Just admit it. But what was I saying? Oh yeah, here's The Who's contribution to transgendered songs. This was The Who...which means that it was sonic and hard as a jet-engine in your face. Don't walk out and listen to this record...RUN OUT AND LISTEN TO THIS RECORD!

One girl was called Jean Marie
Another little girl was Felicity
Another little girl was Sally Joy
The other was me, and I'm a boy
My name is Bill, and I'm a head case
They practice making up on my face
Yeah, I feel lucky if I get trousers to wear
Spend evenings taking hairpins from my hair

chorus:

I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But if I say I am, I get it

Put your frock on, Jean Marie
Plait your hair, Felicity
Paint your nails, little Sally Joy
Put this wig on, little boy

chorus

Wanna play cricket on the green
Ride my bike across the street
Cut myself and see my blood
Wanna come home all covered in mud

chorus

How about They Might Be Giants song 'S-E-X-X-Y'? -

Dressed only in clothes
From her head to her toes
This is the way
The talking part goes

S-E-X-X-Y
More than enough
Around the clock with nobody else
S-E-X-X-Y

There she is
Standing on the bed
Cookie in one hand, wig on her head
S-E-X-X-Y

X because it's extra baby
Y because it's extra baby
Unnoticed by few
Very very few
And that includes you

Look inside your mind
Look inside your eye
Secret agent spy, come to see why
S-E-X-X-Y

One finger nail
Across your back
Baby's first gold tooth initials inscribed
S-E-X-X-Y

X because it's extra baby
Y because it's extra baby
You gotta understand
She wants to be your man
She's got another plan

Marilyn Manson at one point was as androgynous as Rupual (without the girly voice). But has since tamed down. Doesn't make him a TS, but to say transvestite or crossdresser would be acurate. His latest, think from about 2003 onward, has been tame in comparison.

Alpha Shemale was great when they were still around. But they never got real popular outside of Cali. Only one member was a TV as well. The rest GGs...

That's all I can say without research.

Megan Chavelier(sp?) does music. Wether or not it's good is beyond me.

"Androgynous" by The Replacements. Perhaps the most under-appreciated band in America. They thundered out of the American Northwest in the early 80's, with the Punk soul of Cockney guttersnipes and the hooky melodies of a (Sir) Paul McCartney. Imagine...Grunge and Nirvanna--but a full decade before Grunge and Nirvanna.

Here comes Dick, he's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, y'know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous

Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad
And she don't need advice that'll center her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender

Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Lyrics www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/replacements/ (http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/replacements/)
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at
The way you're laughed at now

Now, something meets Boy, and something meets Girl
They both look the same
They're overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
And tomorrow Janie's wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don't last
And today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries

Dude Looks Like A Lady by Aerosmith.
Aerosmith. Hmmm. I once read that the same bigshots who handled Aerosmith were once the same businessmen who saw promise in the New York Dolls (an early androgynous band). These same businessmen, after the demise of the Dolls, then saw the clone-ish/clownish Aerosmith (who cribbed their look from the NY Dolls) as their cash-register.

Aerosmith: to paraphrase Camille Saint-Saens, a band that was both original and good. Unfortunately, what was good about them wasn't original, and what was original wasn't good.

If it is still in print, I recommend "Gender Chameleons: Androgyny in Rock and Roll," by Steven Simels.

Using the word 'androgynous' in a tune about the subject is didactic and not really creative IMO.

As for Aerosmith cribbing their look from the NY Dolls, I wasn't aware Aerosmith was known for wearing heavy powder and glam makeup on stage.

I was always thought and had read Aerosmith borrowed more from Led Zeppelin in their look and style than any other group.

I'm not really a big Aerosmith fan either. I always heard "Dude Looks Like a Lady" was about Vince Neil from Motley Crue. Aerosmith ran into them at a bar, and Steven Tyler was going to hit on Vince until he realized he was a heavily glammed up man. Not sure about them ripping off the Dolls. If you really want to see a group that ripped off all those early glam bands, look no further than the corporate brand...errrr...I mean band, KISS.

Aerosmith pre-1980 had more in common with The Faces than the hair metal bands that came after.

They 'adapted' to remain relevant and sell LPs, but Aerosmith used to be a bottom line rock band IMO.

True. Hair metal, along with Run DMC, saved Aerosmith from becoming a sad car wreck of a story on Behind the Music.

At the very beginning, they dressed in drag like the New York Dolls, but then dumped that cause glam was on the way out and getting no radio play. Then they started the four characters, probably based on Alice Cooper. A lot of their early stuff sounds a lot like T-Rex and the New York Dolls. And the infamous Dynasty album! Not a bad album, but just like they got in late on the glam movement, they got in on disco when a lot of people were starting to get pissed off with it. Still better than Music From the Elder!:)

Thunder - Amy's On The Run

Wow, that song and that band are just...just awful. It's like they took the worst aspects of Foreigner, Styx, Kansas, Toto, etc. and combined them all to make their sound. Just terrible, terrible schlock-rock.

What about Rebel Rebel by David Bowie?

"Got your mother in a whirl
she's no sure if you're a boy or a girl ...
you've torn your dress, your face is a mess,
how could they know?"

She Doesn't Like Boys (http://jamesfrenchmusic.com/jamesfrenchmusic/player/01%20She%20Doesnt%20Like%20Boys.mp3)

Written in 2004 for a girl I knew. This was before porn & before I went full time.

Also, Dress (http://jamesfrenchmusic.com/jamesfrenchmusic/player/12%20Dress.mp3)

Just some fun punk rock...

Oh, and They Might Be Giants, "S-E-X-X-Y". Someone mentioned it earlier but it is a bad ass song.

Jayne County claims Bowie (a fraud in every sense of the word) stole it from her (as she would) that originally it was her song Queenage Baby or something like that. In the 1980s there was a duo, not sure if they were a drag act, called Rebel Rebel, they are pictured in the book Men in Frocks (1984) -a book I used to have but have now lost which is an irritation.

Sponge's album "Wax Ecstatic" was originally supposed to be a concept album about a drag queen. Somewhere along the line, it lost its narrative, but there are still references to drag queens here and there in it.

My contribution is

Now I know it SAYS faggot ... but her line:

"Before long he was crowned Queen for all the world to see."

Makes me think that she was talking about a TS really... plus some other verses.

I don't know if this counts, but here are some of the lyrics from Die Antwoord's song, "Beat Boy"

The Men In The Masks Gather Round The Patient
Waiting In Anticipation
The Old Surgeon Says "Can You See This?"
A Beautiful Woman With A Brand New Penis!
You Klap The Surgeon, Flip Him Right Round
Bend Him Over, Lift His White Gown
Gryp The Surgeon's Milky Butt-Cheeks
Rape The Surgeon, Break The Surgeon
Absorb You Penis Into Your Tummy

Bowie's "Queen Bitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8oGyGo1q-k)" and "Boys Keep Swinging (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMhFyWEMlD4)" are definitely transgender-related songs. And it's implied in passing that he's a transvestite prostitute in "The Bewlay Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a82arE0JSQ)".

And check out Amanda Lear in his "Sorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eLwnDBkiEk)" video.

Good stuff, Nicole.
I never noticed the Bewlay Brothers had a gender bending feel about it, but it IS Bowie.
Great song and quoted in my profile under 'occupation'.

I love the song Nancy Boy by Placebo. Also their singer is very androgyneous.

Alcoholic kind of mood
Lose my clothes Lose my lube
Cruising for a piece of fun
Looking out for number one
Different partner every night
So narcotic outta sight
What a gas
What a beautiful ass

And it all breaks down at the role reversal
Got the muse in my head she's universal
Spinnin' me round she's coming over me
And it all breaks down at the first rehearsal
Got the muse in my head she's universal
Spinnin' me round she's coming over me

Kind of buzz that lasts for days
Had some help from insect ways
Comes across all shy and coy
Just another nancy boy

Woman man or modern monkey
Just another happy junkie
Fifty pounds
Press my button
Going down

Does his makeup in his room
Douse himself with cheap perfume
Eyeholes in a paper bag
Greatest lay I ever had
Kind of guy who mates for life
Gotta help him find a wife
We're a couple
When our bodies double
