Of all the great metal bands you could have put up against Bob Dylan you guys pick Slayer? What the fuck.

Fucking slayer indeed.... using the f word as a pejorative. I do appreciate that, of course, they're not actually music so the comparison is pointless. I think on balance they are marginally more enjoyable that fifteen pneumatic drills though.

Slayer vs Bob Dylan is a stupid comparison, they are too different to compare. Just for curiosity, what Metal Bands would you pit against Dylan?

I think you would appreciate being killed by Cannibal Corpse, how about a "Hammer Smashed Face?" LOL

Now KelticForce are you recommending a piece of music or advocating a brutal attack on me ? We gentle Dylan fans would simply suggest you read a book or something, not threaten deadly force.

Listening to Dewey Cox sound like Bob Dylan. Or maybe Bob Dylan sounds like Dewey Cox.

Wow, all this hubbub caused by little ol Slayer!:) Sure they're heavy, but it's slightly ludicrous to refer to them as "noise". After all, I'd like to see Dylan play the guitar solos that Hannemen and King crank out consistently, it would probably be his farewell performance!:) And I think Slayer is pretty representative of the metal scene for everyone complaining about picking them as the representative metal band. They are like the elder statesmen of metal, you can't go to a metal concert without someone yelling "Slayer!". It's also not like I don't like old music, I've just never really been impressed with Dylan. Compared to The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, and Hendrix, he's pretty weak, in my opinion.

I was being a little bit mischievous when I dissed them. Not my music all the same. But you can't compare them and Dylan for in the end its like saying you prefer broccoli to salmon. Guitar solos are not Dylan's thing and I think clever and intelligent songs are not Slayers.

Lol! Not clever and intelligent? I don't know, "Altar of Sacrifice" has it's moments!:dancing: I think we can agree to disagree. There are some Dylan songs that I enjoy, mostly his most popular ones, All Along the Watchtower, etc. I should probably check out more of his stuff. I like music that I can get pumped up to while I'm working out, there are not a lot of heavy Dylan songs.:)

Dylan is about words. The music tends to be secondary.

Slayer tend to be about music. The words are drowned out.

And there is a very strong argument to say that after Elvis Presley, Dylan's effects on culture, music and the way the world is now are more profound than anyone else in popular music. By that I mean that he and Elvis laid down a basic template that everyone else has had to follow after adapting it in their own way.

No metal band - and I honestly believe I am speaking an objective truth - will leave that kind of legacy.

How do you determine influence in popular culture, where fads and fashions come and go so quickly?

And, in the context of music history, how do you trace the roots of Dylan's music when he himself has tried to explain how varied it was, particularly after his move to New York where he was opened to so many different forms. Consider what influenced him in the 60s: politics and ideas, Woody Guthrie, the Cuban Missile Crisis: Dylan becomes elusive, more so than the Beatles who started out as a rythmn 'n blues band and morphed into the songsmiths of later years: perhaps that is why he is hard to compare to other performers and why he never fit the 'folk singer' category completely.

I also wonder if the roots of American folk music are different from r and b if only because the latter comes from the experience of slavery, field hollers and the blues. As to Dylan's influence on others, he is I think fed up with the whole idea he is a genius -there is his astonishment and sadness in his autobiography when he recalls Robbie Robertson asking him where he intended to take American music next, like he was its controller. To me Dylan is a 1960s phenomenon, taking Woody Guthrie's earthy hymns into a new realm, some (most?) propelled by dope with the addition of electric guitars, the rock band backing music and so on.

Finally I once had a ferocious argument with a woman from LA who said Dylan was one of America's finest poets: I retorted that he is not a poet, but a lyricist, and it went downhill from there...

With all due respect to Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford is the greatest singer to ever walk the face of this earth.

See, now I think that version is awesome! Just like I think Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower is better than the original.
