Always like when this guy is interviewed. Not sure if he's right or wrong but he's pretty intense. A great drinking game would be to take a shot every time he calls someone "sir". You'll be loaded by the end of the segment. If not he'll step through the TV into your living room and snap your neck.

The distinguished Lebanese American Fouad Ajami wrote an interesting review of his latest book in which he compares Scheuer to Captain Ahab and notes Scheuer's contempt for Steve Coll and Lawrence Wright (I liked both their books), but crucially suggests Scheuer missed a key element in bin Laden's personal development: the family as a corporation from which he felt excluded: the sense of being an 'outsider', 'myself against the world' is fundamental to fundamentalism. Two page review is here:

I'm thinking about buying his Bin Laden book and Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror.

Scheuer's strength is his knowledge of Arabic and the Middle East, and his vigilance against those who think there is 'more to come'...his weakness is an overbearing belief in himself as the 'lone prophet' but I do wonder if he has become so obsessed with 'the threat' that he cannot say if the Middle East has actually moved on from the kind of radical politics which, so far, has achieved nothing. The East African bombings are now more than 10 years into history, since 9/11 there have been some individual attempts to down aeroplanes, but I wonder if the significance of the lack of 'spectaculars' is due to both the success of military operations against al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, Pakistan and so on, and also due to a lack of willing volunteers? We saw in the UK over last weekend that a miniscule splinter group of diehard Republicans who rejected the Good Friday agreement blew up a Catholic policeman in his car, ignoring the fafct that the majority of the people they claim to represent deplore this kind of act; and I don't doubt there will be some act of terror somewhere derived from the 'al-Qaeda franchise- although I hope it doesnt happen; but I do wonder if the actuality of the threat is as intense as Scheuer thinks it is.

Scheuer kicks ass! I love it when he lays the info-smackdown on the talking heads and they just stutter, stammer, and stare, because they can't come up with a response!

They always have trouble figuring him out. He ends up making them look pretty stupid most of the time when they try to get cute with him. I think he's more of a Conservative or Libertarian type but he seems to dislike most actual politicians except Ron Paul.
