What's the significance of the scorpion tattoo?

I mentioned in another thread that I didn't understand what the significance of the scorpion tattoo is that many TSs, specifically in Brazil, have. Did it originally mean that they were sort of working for Fabio Scorpian, and now that he has passed, is it dedicated to his memory? Is it because of the stinger and it's allusions to a penis? Is it some sort of Brazilian-specific cultural thing? Or is it something else entirely? Enquiring minds want to know.:)
