By no means does an orchiechtomy preclude you from having gender reassignment surgery at a later date.

However, if the time period between the orchiechtomy and the GRS is very long, there may be a risk of the the penile and scrotal donor tissue atrophying to a degree.

To mediate against that, many surgeons suggest that the candidate not wait too many years between the procedures. They also suggest that you manually stretch your penis, via masturbation, or otherwise.

You are spot on with your statement. Patients who have testicular cancer will often-times have a prosthetic testicle for aesthetic purposes.

The practice is also used with show dogs and other animals for the same reasons, they have been neutered and the testicles are there for aesthetics.

I just found out that my insurance will cover orichectomy if my doctor deem it medically necessary. In order to get him to do that, I'll have my therapist write a letter of recommendation to him so that he can get it done.

Yes, this is the case. Orchi is no longer standards of care in the United States for people who intend at some future point to have Full SRS. My understanding is that it is still practiced in Canada though. It is no longer standards of care for the reasons that you cote above. No, but a) the scrotal sac seems to wither away all on its own after orchiectomy, and b) if you start hormones before or in early puberty, your testicles should also remain small, i.e. your scrotal sac will never have grown to the size of an adult or near-adult male in the first place. So my guess is they will go into SRS with a similarly small amount of genital tissue as somebody who had orchiectomy past-puberty and lets a number of years pass before actual SRS.

From what I've heard, surgeons recommend regular stretching exercises for anybody who chooses to have an orchi done before SRS, to keep both the penis and the scrotum from shrinking too much. Don't know if that's true.

Virilization is the development of exaggerated masculine characteristics, usually in women, often as a result of the adrenal glands overproducing androgens (testosterone and similar hormones).

Virilization is caused by excess production of androgens usually because of a tumor in or enlargement of an adrenal gland or a tumor in an ovary or abnormal hormone production by the ovaries.

Symptoms include excess facial and body hair, baldness, acne, deepening of the voice, increased muscularity, and an increased sex drive.

The body changes make it easy for doctors to recognize virilization, and the dexamethasone suppression test can help doctors determine the cause.

The adrenal gland that contains the tumor is surgically removed, although sometimes drugs can reduce the excess hormone production.

The most common cause of virilization is an enlargement of the hormone-producing portions of the adrenal cortex (adrenal hyperplasia). Sometimes the cause is a hormone-producing tumor (adenoma or cancer) in the gland. Occasionally, virilization occurs when a cancer outside the adrenal gland produces androgens. This cancer is likely to be a tumor of the ovaries, although occasionally overactivity of androgen secretion by the ovaries may occur in later life.
