I don't see DADT is a political issue, so I suppose it's cool for the General Discussion Boards. It's too late to help Bradley Manning ( sorry...couldn't resist). I was on the fence about it but if the Joint Chiefs are cool with it, so am I...but time will tell. There are still some serious concerns by the Service Chiefs. Combat units can be a touchy place to introduce new social policy. It might be a prudent idea to roll this out slowly and keep openly gay service members away from frontline combat troops for a while.

I can say this...when and where I served this would have been unthinkable, and openly expressing your sexual preference for same sex partners would not have been advisable, and actually dangerous....but that seems like a lifetime ago. Call it a societal maturation process , or just more tolerance...but I guess if you're puttin' your ass on the line (so to speak) your sexual preferrence shouldn't be an issue.

I see big time problems in the SHORT TERM because of this ruling.
First of all the sexual shenanigans that go in the military are MAJOR.
Wive swapping, military members prostituting themselves(both genders),RAMPANT cheating and the CONSTANT breaking of mlitary code of justice is epic, rampant and non ending.
The military is VERY selective about enforcing these rules about sex....it is after all ILLEGAL according to the UCMJ for anyone unmarried to engage in sex.
Is that enforced?
No.
They do however go after the gays with zest and vigor and this is just wrong.
I see some people using this ruling to commit violence against people in the military they think are gay....I hope I am wrong.
Some of these commanders are so fucking unprofessional and will covertly endorse violence against gays.

Wow....seems somebody got his pee pee hot ! !! Nothing wrong with having strong feelings, but take it from someone who's been where the shit's pretty deep... You obviously think gays should be allowed to serve openly, but Solitary Brother is right. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but unless you've been there, DADT may have been an imperfect compromise, but men under fire with the rigors of life and death on a daily basis is not the place to conduct social equality at a whim. The military is not a democracy, and the front lines are a place where people make up their own rules. I served with men who had never seen a black person until they arrived at boot camp. You can call that ignorant, but that's the reality. Anyone who has served under stress can tell you all sorts of people from all walks of life find themselves in incredibly chaotic situations. Unit cohesion is not a term to be taken lightly...it's a matter of life and death. Race seems to become a non issue over time as men learn the need each other to survive... I can't say the same for sexuality. I'm giving you the reality, and I admit it ain't pretty...but I'm far less inclined than you to place a gay person at risk until this can be implemented with care and caution. The US military is highly professional and those that have personal feelings on the matter will ultimately follow orders.

I don't disagree it's time has come, but it must be done circumspectly.

Yeah, he must get over this. People will f*ck. They'll do all of those things you are talking about, anywhere, and everywhere. Remember >70% of the military is ok with this, utterly. So, I think they know what's best for themselves. And, besides, in relation to this community, face it, DADT is at the heart of why the everything in Soldier's Girl happened.

If I understand correctly yesterday's vote broke the filibuster. The actual repeal has yet to be passed. When it does, we'll be taking another slow, lumbering step forward. I for one will be happy that we're finally joining with the other civilized nations on this issue.

Is there really any Doubt that a Democratically controlled house will pass it...or that Obama will sign it ? I didn't think so. He's promised this to his base for 3 years.
And again as documented above....I understand those of you who view this as a civil rights issue, or that of fairness and equality, and I'm not entirely disagreeing with you....but this better be done prudently or it could be disastrous. As for joining the rest of the "civilized" world the inference is we're Neanderthals. While trying to emulate the rest of the civilized world might make for a catchy slogan, I'd be careful not to overuse it. Taken a look at Europe's economy lately? And with respect to military issues, no disrespect to anyone, but I prefer our military lead rather than follow. Nobody was looking to the Netherlands or Finland when it came to confronting the Taliban in Afghanistan. There just simply is no comparison. It's a false equivalency Trish. Hell other than the Brits and Poles, we received almost no help. Again...no disrespect intended, but there is no equal on the planet when it comes to US Military readiness, and I'd like to keep it that way .

I respect a gay, lesbian or bisexual soldier a heck of a lot more than a heterosexual chickenhawk. It is about time we move TOWARD ending discrimination. Hear, hear.

I agree in regards that anybody should be able to serve that feels the "calling", but as I have said it before, it will take something bad to happening before the US Military impliments the changes that MUST be done.
The other option is for a senior enlisted or officer to come out that he/she is gay and then changes can/will happen faster.

As a former Marine I get asked all the time about the DADT and I have always said that I want the best shooter in my foxhole when the rounds start flying, and I don't care what he/she does in bed!

Well....I might disagree they're one of the best military's. They haven't fared so well in the thier recent conflicts with Hamas, but your point is well taken. And remember...they have mandatory service requirements ( should we adopt that too? LOL) and are a tiny country surronded by hostiles on all sides. They really can't afford to be too choosey!
I think your larger point is that it can work if done correctly, and on that we don't disagree.

No.
I think you need to brush up on your UCMJ.

That said, yes enforcement of many of these regulations is VERY selective.
