Too bad the title (and body text too) calles her "Transvestite", literally from the spanish word for it:

"Por primera vez, una travesti tiene un DNI que la reconoce como mujer"

These countries gotta stop calling TS and TG by that derisory and inaccurate term. I've even seen Brazilian sites call them "travestis"

Yes, well, the media has a lot to catch up in argentina, but the government is doing a lot of good work, recently we had a gay marriage law for all the country, and there are people working on a "gender law" for people to have less problems to do what she did.

My understanding is that "travesti" used in Latin-American countries is closer in meaning to "transgendered" -rather than "transvestite".

I understand that geographically and culturally a word can have a whole different meaning and connotation but still i think it's inaccurate and unappropriate, so forgive me for being so close minded. The word itself still DOES come from the terms TRANS and VESTIR or CROSS and DRESS forgive me if i am getting the spanish or even latin origins wrong.

in the words Transsexual and Transgender, the thing that is "crossed" is sex and gender itself, not only the superficial dress behaviour.

So even though in latinamerican countries "travesti" might be used to encompass Transsexuals and Transgendered, i still think it is fundamentally wrong and therefore important to start using the more correct term, both scientifically correct and politically as well, and i'm not talking about USA and Europe but the world in general. Call things by their due name.

But yeah i applaud Argentina's progress in this field and i hope other countries follow in their steps.

The Spanish word "travesti" means "transvestite" in English, so yes, it is wrongly used. The accurate word would be "transexual" or "transgenero" / "transgenerista".

People here in Latinamerica (at least here in Colombia) aren't as informed about the difference between the 3 words. Even worse, I've seen several magazines call transsexual actress Endry Cardeño a "gay actor" :(.
