When I travel To Alaska or Montana I use the military Foul Weather Gear with
polypropylene as a base layer to wick perspiration away from the skin. Wool on top.

Depends on the weather you will be in and the activity level. Cross country skiing, snow shoeing, etc. will require less layering than sitting still (ex hunting).

Well one trick that has worked for me for many years is cotton underneath where it basically creates a nice heater with your own body temp and to keep that heat in and the wind and cold out I wore a polyester leather imitation jacket, which during cold weather hardened up a bit to become the perfect windchill blocker, team that up with a good cap and you got a good combo there

Coldest I have ever been in was -47F with windchill, cars were literally dying on the highway, including mine, which blew its alternator out and the power steering belt became too stiff and flew off.

Polypro based thermals underneath, then some type of further insulator. The main consideration is to wick away any moisture from your body. If you get damp/wet, you get cold!

And if you want the warmest outlayer jacket, get a CanadaGoose parka. Hellishly expnsive, but well worth it. Keeps me warm at -25 (standing still for hours and not generating heat by movement). For the head, a russian Ushanka (those furry hats, and get the real fur - rabbitt) mine is so warm I have to take it off every 10 minutes.
