yeah i dont think a mmo for spacemarines will really work ... it would be very limited if they were to keep it true to the books etc.. the marines serve one purpose that is all .

Now Dawn of War the RTS games were well good :) i enjoyed them alot ... I would love to see an action movie series based on the universe though ...but GW seem to be tight onto holding on to movie rights for that .....

But they could do it like an onging set of films that interlink, alot like the star trek films followed the time line/history ,,, start with the horus heresy :)

The second preview certainly makes the graphics look a bit more refined than the original. Still not great, but hopefully Abnett wrote a good script!

Warhammer 40k. How much do I love that game and lore. Well I have the Chaos Marines Black Legion Symbol tattooed on my shoulder. Which is my Avatar as well on most forums.

I played the table top, read all the books, played all the video games, one of the earliest was one called Space Hulk for Genesis.

I can't WAIT for this Ultramarines movie.

I thought it a shame that they never did anything with cyphis cain books. unfortunatly i cant see this having any main stream appeal as you have to be a geek to even know who the space marines are, Also in to the univers to even care.

hehe yes ... whats quite funny as well is that 30000years into the future they have lasers, warp technology etc , canons that can destroy entire planets from orbit with pulse blasts, shock weapons etc... but yet their core weapon is a bolter which is basically a machine gun with a massive calibre bullet ...hehe

I didn't ever play the game, Fire Warrior was the name, but I did read the book of the same name. It was pretty good. And the Tau are in one of the Cane books. I'm actually getting a manta from forge world http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Tau/TAU-AIRCRAFT/TAU-MANTA.html !

If you have the original Rogue Trader hardback book, there's a drawing of a marine with the raised shoulder skull and 4 "bones" radiating outward from it. Very stylish - I remember wanting that for a shoulder tattoo years ago.

I'm a huge WH40K geek. Love the novels, already ordered the movie. Been playing since Rogue Trader. Still have it sitting on my book shelf!For Games, Fire Warrior was decent. I loved Chaos Gate, but it was too buggy. Dawn of War is great, I'm really looking forward to the new Space Marine 3rd person shooter. it looks intense.

I cant imagine Liberty with a Pauldron tattoo. She already is amazing, that would just send her over the top!

First off, I was really happy when I found out that there were making Ultramarines. I've been following production and the crazy thing is that the Exile Films (now defunct) production of Bloodquest that was never completed looked better than this. Blur and Epic studios also made better looking opening cinematics for the two Dawn of War games that, literally, shame this effort. GW is so damn protective of their IP and yet so miserly that they won't let anyone take it and run with it... you could do some seriously cool stuff with mega bucks and John Hurt and Terrance Stamp are not going to be able to save this lackluster CGI.

As for bolters, they are a little more than just machine guns with high calibers. They are .75 mass-reactive, self-propelled rockets... <=== Rogue Trader player here...

I have a feeling that this movie has just been an excercise for them. Let's see what it takes to make a movie, and see what we are in store for. I agree that the cg is dated, but being a fan of Black Library stuff, I'm confident it will have a great story. I still love the Starship Troopers CG show. The animation was similiar to this, yet it still has an engrossing story.
Overall I'm happy that they are so protective of their ip. No lackluster b grade movies that destroy the cannon or spirit of the universe. Sure, this movie is gonna be dated, but you know it will stay true.
Also, I can see them not wanting to take a huge risk with a hundred million dollar movie. To be honest, the only people who are going to watch this movie are into it already. That's not nearly enough people to turn a profit on a big budget movie.

So, I'm happy they are starting small and will grow as they can. I'm confident they can do it. Look at their books. Started with a couple small collections of short stories from the game, and now are a scifi juggernaut. Not just gamer geeks are into those books now...

The Horus Heresy is exceptional. So many good books, and so many points that change what you think about the Heresy. How about the Alpha Legion deciding to follow Chaos to try and save humanity in the long run? Or Magnus destroying the Emperors plans to beat chaos on accident? So many great moments. Just picked up Nemesis, but havent had a chance to read it yet.

Liberty, have you read Titanicus yet? I enjoyed it.

I'd say my two favorite Characters are Captain Ventris from the Ultramarines, and Commissar Gaunt. It's kind of funny, as I never really liked the Ultramarines. I thought they were just too generic. But I love the Ultramarines novels.

I'm also a huge fan of any of the books that Deal with the Inquisition. Eisenhorn, Ravenor, and Inquisitor omnibus's are a must!

yeah i feel sorry for Magnus, I also feel sorry for Horus as he wasnt fully corrupted by Chaos as he still had good in him unlike Abbadon The Despoiler ... I think personally Horus knew the Emperor would obliterate him and thats partly to do with why he lowered his shields ..

So many cool stories in the Black Library books ,, i hope they like my synopsis on Ahriman the Chaos MArine Sorcerer of the Thousand Sons ...If they like it then i will be given 3months in which to write a 10,000word short story on his character and events :) he is bad ass ...

Ahh Nurgle is bad ass ...rumored at times to be more powerful than even Khorne :) though i think its quite cool now with the awakening of the C-tan ,, and you gotta love the tyranids :)

Wow Libby, you've made me break my lurking to comment on this. I'm amazed you're a 40k fan! Would never have thought it.
I play Ultramarines (and have played since the rogue trader days) and can't wait for this movie.
The wallpaper you posted is cool. Its the concept art for a model that was featured in the rogue trader book. Its an incredible piece. Incedentally, I know a few people who work at GW HQ, and when I go up there I get to play with the studio models and meet really some really cool people. I've met Dan Abnett a few times (the guy who wrote the screenplay for the new movie, and the excellent 'Storm of Iron') as he lives near me, very nice chap indeed. Best of luck with the story. I've submitted a few but always been turned down, Hope you have some better luck than I did!

well i thought it was medicore but i still enjoyed it as it was teh first wh40k movie ... but i was hoping for a really big battle not just skirmish... I think they have setup the way now to make more ...

The movie was made by a pretty small studio so I went in not expecting Avatar with Space marines. It was a decent first attempt and I generally enjoyed it but I think the biggest thing to take away from this is that it showed a lot of potential and hopefully its success convinces Games Workshop to try again on a bigger scale.

I feel the opposite, I feel that a Game Trailer (interesting pointless tidbit, when you went to the Theatre to see a film in the oldee days you would get a ticket for the whole day AFTER the film you were seeing was due to start, because the idea of films was so novel you would see adverts for future news items or moving stories come after or Trailing the movie you watched, thats why you have Movies and Trailers) anyway, we should get more excited about games because they are a story you take part IN rather than passively watch.

I have no commenced storyboarding a series of 6 scenes in the wh40k , i want to start shooting in august .. i can make armour easy enough, and get it painted up etc ... just need to figure out how the scenes would pan out sex wise .... be a very dark , bdsm , rough fucking type of affair lol

As far as the movie went, I liked it. I didnt go in expecting a summer blockbuster. I think it turned out very well for their first movie, especially since they did it themselves. Some of the scenes and mood hit the WH40K universe spot on, and that makes me excited to see what they do in the future...
