It is a word. It works both ways. It may have originated as slang many many (like centuries) years ago, but that would be like the incorporation of most words into a language.

It's a homophone. Same spelling different meaning. Sunshyne you gave 2 good examples. Here are a couple more:

I read books (pronounced - reed)
or
I've read books (pronounced - red)

Here I found this on Dictionary.com

hom·o·nym

–noun 1. homophone (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/homophone) ( def. 1 ) .

2. a word the same as another in sound and spelling but different in meaning, as chase “to pursue” and chase “to ornament metal.”

3. (loosely) homograph (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/homograph).

4. a namesake.

5. Biology . a name (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/name) given to a species or genus that has been assigned to a different species or genus and that is therefore rejected.

It's a homophone.

No, it's not (neither is read/read). Homophone literally means "same sound" and these don't qualify (also, importantly, they should be different word origin).
