I saw this on the way to a party at HK, I think. It was right by a parking lot where they stacked cars. I thought it got smashed there, but what you said makes more sense.

Last time I recall parking on the street in NYC was with a rental. It was the week of Stonewall 25 and the weather was sunny and hot, so I cracked a window to keep the interior from getting impossibly hot.

At the end of the day (I was only in the city a few hours), I was curious as to why the glove box was open and the driver's door unlocked. I just assumed that I'd forgotten to lock the door and that the glove box had just popped open (Rentals have 'quirks'). Yet when I got out at one of the rest stops on the NJTP I found a massive wad of gum stuck to my ass and the seat that I had not seen when I got in the car.

Apparently, one of the local dickless wonders had gotten into the car via the cracked-open window (I think it had roll-down windows and those can sometimes be forced open simply by pushing them down) and poked around the interior and the trunk. Finding nothing of value (It was a daytrip, so no luggage and I had my camera with me) needledick left me a sticky calling card on the seat.

When in the Big City I have found better luck in a parking garage. In NYC, I tend to frequent one on 32nd Street that is family owned and so attentive to their customers that when I parked there in '92, after a four year absence from the city and in a different car, the girl in the booth asked "You still got that freaky old hearse?". :)

Of course, garages aren't always safe. After a weekend in Baltimore I found my car open with a number of things missing (Mostly toll change, etc.). I later learned that one of the garage attendants had been arrested for breaking into the cars. He probably got bagged for trying to pass Japanese Yen, Canadian Tire notes, and Connecticut Turnpike tokens which is pretty much all that he found in my car at the time.

I park and drive here all the time. Just need to know what you are doing.
