Name 10 of what YOU consider to be the most known cites in the world. (please do not look at a atlas, map, book etc) just write down the answers that come to your head, be interesting to see how frequent the same answers come up and if varies according to where you lived and also where you visited etc.
gaz

If anyone else has any ideas of where to post be nice, as id love a mixed range of people doing, eg europe, america regions, oceania, asia, africa etc.
I have got a fair few results so far but i think i need a lot more.

New York - The most famous city in the world
Los Angeles -The exporter of american culture
London - The British empire covered most of the Earth, most countries know London
Moscow - The Cold war ensured Moscows prominence in both the West and the East
Paris - French culture is not as pervasive as English but it's well known.
Sydney - Always near the top of the various lists. Great Harbour and some iconic architecture
Tokyo - The Japanese have become ultra prominent over the last 70 nyears
Mumbai - The sheer number of Indians as a % of world population ensures the former Bombay's place
Beijing - see Mumbai but for Chinese
Rome - The most famous city of the ancient world, home of one of the worlds dominating religions

10 close but no cigar -

Washignton DC, San Francisco - both are overshadowed by NY and LA respectivly
Berlin - has faded a little given the Germans not being as all pervasive culturally
Vienna - ask this questiopn 100 years ago and it;'s in now not so much
Barcelona & Madrid - the two main Spanish cities,Spanish culture dominated much of the world.
Rio - the best known Sth American city
Baghdad - Has been the most famous Middle eastern city for a long time
Bangkok - probably edges Seoul as the best known of the other Asian cities
Mecca - the holy city of the Muslim religion

I have to agree with alpha“s description of my hometown Vienna. But unlike many cities in the lists, Vienna has a past and history.

Here“s my list (in no particular order):

New York City
Rio De Janeiro
Barcelona
London
Paris
Tokyo
Hong Kong
Los Angeles
Moscow
Chicago

With Vienna much like Prague, Warsaw, Venice & Milan they are fading in terms of fame. Old European powers have faded over the last 150 years and newer places such as Australia and the Americas have sprung to prominence. Mumbai and Beijing should be on everybodies lists. They may have changed their names from the versions that they had (Bombay and Peking) but they have long been major centres of the world and their respective countries populations means that if you quantify fame as a high number of people knowing you exist then a lot more people have heard of them than say Chicago. Chicago is a big and important US city but it's behind NY, LA SF, Washington and maybe Vegas in terms of fame outside of the US largely because it doesn't have a big attraction to draw attention.
