The affirmitive answers to my technical posits lay out a perfectly reasonable scenario as to why "newbies and lazy fucks" should think before posting. My somewhat pissy response was a reflection of the tone I saw this thread taking. As a "newbie" I found myself being somewhat offended by some of the follow up posts, which could keep newbies from posting for fear of being ridiculed. If there is a serious issue with technical capacity and the cost of running this board, then 1)posting limits should be set,2)clear rules should be set up prior to allowing memberships to be accepted,3)a nominal charge should be imposed, at least for the initial membership. I do enjoy this site, and find it both informative and entertaining. My comments were not meant to offend you, or anyone involved in the running of the board, but were intended to mix it up with those who were slinging crap.

Having operated numerous forums (using phpBB, FUD, and other software) over the years, some of which average over 3 million pageviews/month and over 250,000 posts, I know the technical limitations that you can run into running mysql and serving up this much content. I don't know your bandwidth (actual and limits), but I'm sure it's high. In particular, serving the number of high res photos posted in the forum eats up the bandwidth. Server space really should be a non-issue though, as harddrives are cheap.

We'd love to pick up a client like HA (And we have the capacity to do it), but in a recent turn to increase hosting revenue by decreasing costs, we moved to leased server space from a company that, in return for the miniscule server fees, has a "No Adult Content" clause in their contract. This is apparently a common punishment for frugal hosters. We have been discussing the option of running up our own servers, to eliminate the 'if-you're-going-to-play-in-our-yard' restrictions, but have to work up permanent space first as we outgrew mom-n-dad's basement long ago.

The co-lo option works really well for me. I made a great deal with my provider, and for a very reasonable fee their tech guys are available to help me resolve any and all server/hardware/software upgrade issues as they arise (since that's not my ballywick). There's no "no adult" clause in our agreement, not that it matters given the sites I host.
