Though some mysterious coincidence this forum is free of hpv.

As well as homophobia and early hair loss...

It is totally as symptomatic in males right? Doesn't that means it isn't really a disease?

Guys usually show no symptoms after being exposed... but not always. It can cause genital warts on male genitalia, its just not as common as it is for girls.

yeah, the majority of carriers never show any symptoms. It's also not the kind of thing most people will pipe right up about. If you don't believe me, just check the "who has herpes" thread as well as the "who has had chlamydia, ghonnorhea, syphilis or crabs: thread. Did you really expect people to chime in here? LOL

So how would a guy even know he has it? I assume women show genital warts when they have it?

what the hell is it?Huma papilloma virus. it is the vrus that causes warts, and I'm assuming in this forum we are talking about the strains that cause genital warts. These warts can cause cervical cancer in women. Your body will beat the virus itself over time. Also, there is now a vaccine, I think it's called Gardasil.

Usually he wouldn't know he has it unless his GF/wife started getting warts.

Also, there is now a vaccine, I think it's called Gardasil.

The vaccine only works if you've never been exposed to the virus. Once you've been exposed the vaccine is worthless.

That's why they want to start giving it to little kids before they reach puberty, if you wait until they're sexually active its usually too late because almost everyone (~80% of the sexually active population) is an HPV carrier.

It can cause genital cancer on anyone, not just girls. Guys can develop cancer of the penis from HPV (its just not common). More guys die from breast cancer.

Not even warts, necessarily, just an abnormal pap-shmere (sic) followed by an uncomfortable procedure to guard against cervical cancer.

Not true. Ask a doctor. If you get a wart, it will most likely be frozen off with liquid nitrogen, and then you can be vaccinated once the wart is removed.

Taken straight from the CDC website:

It is important for girls to get HPV vaccine before they become sexually active. The vaccine is most effective for girls/women who get vaccinated before their first sexual contact. It does not work as well for those who were exposed to the virus before getting the vaccine.

If you had it when you were younger, you'd carry it now.
The most dangerous thing it can do is give your female partner cervical cancer, so if you have one, you should tell her. It will just mean she needs to be screened more often.

that is correct. you are always a carrier if you ever have had it. it can cause rectal warts in women. very painful and must be removed during surgery. even if you never show symptoms you are a carrier. also you will not be allowed to give blood. so please disclose if you ever had it before any medical procedure. precauitions need to be taken. and of course never anal sex without a condom, never. this is a very serious condition, i have seen what it can do. be very careful.

Nope!
But as a matter of fact I did have a run-in with it a few years ago. I came into contact with someone who claimed to have it, went to see my doc and came out just fiiiiiiiiiine. :)

this thread is as full of useful facts as a high school locker room. If 80% of the sexually active population has it, you do. Or more accurately, you have had it. Most HPV infections "clear" on their own. But if you've had sex with two or more partners, it's naive to think you haven't been exposed.

I have a few growths on my scrotum out of all places which havent received any sexual activity they dont look like your typical wart which is why Im getting a second opinion from a specialist

I have an interesting question. They stress having girls get the Gardisil vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, but what about guys who don't want to get HPV and thus give someone cervical cancer?

Assuming I haven't had HPV already (and if the 80% statistic is correct, I guess I can't guarantee that), I would just as soon not have a girlfriend get cancer, but it seems like it would be odd to ask the doctor about it because its so heavily marketed towards women.
