The Matthew Shepard Act expands the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability." The bill would also:

• Remove the current prerequisite that the victim be engaging in a federally-protected activity, like voting or going to school;
• Give federal authorities greater ability to engage in hate crimes investigations that local authorities choose not to pursue;
• Provide $10 million in funding for 2008 and 2009 to help State and local agencies pay for investigating and prosecuting hate crimes;
• Require the FBI to track statistics on hate crimes against transgender people (statistics for the other groups are already tracked).

It's taken 10 years BUT FINALLY

Who cares obama is a piece of shit. Just look at the advisors he brought in, All leftovers from bush and clinton era's. There is no president of the united states because corporate america runs the white house. Nothing against you though.

15 democrats didnt sign it either... I just dont know how you can support a party whose Senator members vote against civil rights legislation.

The Senate Vote was 68 to 29, with 3 Senators not voting.

Only one Democrat voted No
Only 8 Republican's voted Yes (and they only did so because it was attached to a Defense Bill)

so for 21 Republican's, voting against gay rights was more important than voting for funding for our soldiers.

That's the party undeserving of the support of anyone here.

Wow lets waste the tax payers money and bankrupt this country more by giving 10 million in money this country doesn't have by prosecuting "suspected" hate crimes. Another reason why Obama is trash and dumbass laws like these take up space in legislation.

;) Your the bestesest FK :).

As far as the (probably) continued negative remarks on such landmark legislation for trans people, as the one posted here, it's really worthless to comment on as this is such a great move forward.

I have come to terms with the fact that for some of these men, the only right we deserve is to get them off and for sexual pleasure-we are not peope to them. just sexual objects that don't deserve much. It really isnt worth commenting on such ignorance.

Allanah, if Obama turned water into wine, they'd accuse him of promoting alcoholism LOL
But he just signed the first significant Federal Civil rights law that includes us in its protection, and those rights and those others on the way under his administration will outweigh the wrongs we keep having to deal with here

Obama's usually a pretty easy target for ridicule but it seems he's backing off on the enforcement on marijuana laws, at least as far as medical marijuana goes which is good. With his history of drug use, if he cracked down too much it would be like the black calling the kettle pot.

Obama still sux, his "transparency" and commander chief skills are laughable, and he makes Jimmy Carter actually look good.

It's kind of nice bringing a joint into the can with you while you pinch off a loaf. It's relaxing and makes all your business slide out easier.
