The Body Archive New York City is Proud to Present:

WEST STREET: Photos of the night life on West Street, In the old Meat Packing District.

Place : THE BODY ARCHIVE GALLERY
#9 Ninth Ave, between 13th street and little west 12th,
on the west side of Ninth Ave, second floor


On October 17th, 18th, and the 21st, I will be giving an exhibit of my photos, rare and raw images, showing the night life under the old West Side Highway, from 1975, up to the 1990’s. B&W photos that record the transgender life along the West Village/meat packing district of New York City, at a time when the night life was wild and the clubs were “anything goes”. This was Hand held night photography with TRI_X film of the real people of the street and their culture; working and surviving on the dark streets of an industrial wasteland, using their transgender beauty to earn the cash to survive in New York City. An incredible photographic documentary of the people and street life in a time long gone.

The BODY ARCHIVE is located in the old Meatpacking district, surviving the gentrification that has changed a dark, run down industrial block, into a hip urbanized club-land, filled with restaurants, luxury Hotels and fashionable boutiques. The photos you will see are a time capsule to the past life that once thrived in the deserted night time streets

I used to go there and pick up hookers. The old Edelweiss on 29th was fun during that time too.

I hope you remember me. We met at Ina's Hamachi in March (I was at the Night of 1000 Gowns earlier). My Nude Photography class is making a trip up to NYC for the day on Friday, Oct 23. I wish your gallery was shown on that day because I would make sure it would be one of the stops we go to when we're up there.

I was thinking about twittering everyone to let people know where to find/stalk me, but I don't have an iPhone (or internet-capable phone), unfortunately.

We'll probably go to the Museum of Sex as one of our stops.

If you are coming all that way, perhaps we can arange sonething else.
A private show with your class perhaps. the gallery will be closed and my art removed, but I see no reason not to try something else. Can you think of a place where we can all gather and see? I will try to think of something.

I am getting some good responses from my upcoming show!
Don't forget its open for 3 days.
Saturday the 17th
Sunday the 18th,
and
Wedsday the 21st
I will have print, cards, and books for sale at the gallery, and maybe a dvd show if I can process it in time!

if the show gets a nice crowd, then I want to do it again in a bigger space, say next year in march.
so many people are asking to see my work at a better time, so I will have to think of an alternate.
I have tons of photos from all kinds of tg clubs long gone and parties that I want to show next

Gonzo takes great pics!
He took some of me in the rain last year, in The Village, then some in Times Square! Then he took some of me in the spots you see in his exhibit!

well the show is almost ready to go!!! just two more photos to prep and the walls are full. I'll have books of photos to see as well!
I'l getting a lot of attention on this, from social groups and emails, I only wish all the people at the over priced hotel accross the street could come and see this!

I hope this show is visited by lots of local people who enjoy the HA website!

I just finished a show of my photography, images of the streets of the meat packing district from the 80's,
shown at the BODY ARCHIVE at nine ninth ave,
the heart of the meat packing district.
the show was a great success!!!
the room was full of people coming to see my show

one of the last people to visit my show was a gentleman who was helped into the studio by 4 lovely ladies.
I had to get him a seat cause he was a bit weak from climbing up 3 set of stairs

he turned out to be none other than Harry Belafonte!!!!!
