The diner is still there. They have a DJ in the evenings. Its loud like a club. I hung out there last year after copping the iPhone 3G the first Friday it came out.

Great old photos. Unfortunately, that scene has been over for a long time, now. By '99 the scene was pretty much done as a heavy police presence bore down the neighborhood which then gentrified quite quickly. When I first moved into the neighborhood in 1990 it was like a circus....practically every night....and that includes the winter. Every so often the cops made a show of force and would arrest enough girls to fill a van before they went back to their donuts.

It's a shame. It was a nice quiet, crazy neighborhood......now you have to put up with all the tourists and yuppies walking four abreast along the sidewalks. :puke

That's what I miss about New York. There's a certain kinda stench there that you won't find in other cities. I'm serious, you step off the bus at the port authority and it hits you right away. I lived it, perhaps on a lesser level than a few of you here, but more intimately then most of you. The meat packing district in the 70's and 80's was a kinky and exciting place to be if you knew what you were doing and knew what you were looking for. The streets were dirty, the "girls" were on the lower end of the erotic spectrum. Most of them were on drugs, sorry, but it is true. The quality of the sex was poor as they made you cum and ran to the next corner. $15 blow jobs could only get you so far , even back then.

yes it was rough back then.
they sucked to survive, as it were.
you had to sell yourself, and you had to sell your feminine soul to get the cash to see another day in nyc. and you took a risk each time. never knowing who you were getting into the car with, getting arrested, getting sick, getting robbed. Remember the nut case who did a drive by shooting at the bar "sneakers" with an Uzi! Stories of kids surviving by cooking the spoiled meat they found in the dumpsters on the meatr market.
How many other places existed at that time that would accept them for what they were, transgender people, born male, wanting to be female, treated like freaks, stepped on like trash. the street was tough, but they were tougher cause they did what they had to do to survive, while we who had our 9 to 5 jobs and cash in our pockets could walk among them and enjoy the show from a nice safe distance. I sit and wonder sometines how many of these smiling laughing girls survived to this day, 25 years later.

what I heard was this:
The clean up did not really start till the death of a real estate developer in 1999 who held large patches of real estate in and around the meatmarket area. He did not develope the land he held, for his own reasons and plans, and when he died the buildings and land returned to the market and that when all the building and gentrification began. till then growth in the meatmarket area was dead

Ok, boys and girls, Let's not over romanticize the past.
I lived it, perhaps on a lesser level than a few of you here, but more intimately then most of you. The meat packing district in the 70's and 80's was a kinky and exciting place to be if you knew what you were doing and knew what you were looking for. The streets were dirty, the "girls" were on the lower end of the erotic spectrum. Most of them were on drugs, sorry, but it is true. The quality of the sex was poor as they made you cum and ran to the next corner. $15 blow jobs could only get you so far , even back then.
The clubs were great, especially if you had the guts to participate and not be just another voyeur. Yes, the thought of 20 guys masturbating while watching some tg/gg give head to a friend is hysterical in hindsight. But was erotic back then.
The discussions I have read about the prostitutes in Brazil and Thailand remind me of 9th and 10th Avenue
You drop your pants, they had your wallet. They knew you were not going to tell the police. I knew too many of the girls and they would walk up and down the street and laugh themselves silly.
Look at the pics posted, Are these ladies having fun? Nope. they are earning a living. Those of us who went to clubs in the area were no better than those yuppies who roam about there now. We were having a grand time but ht e girls on the block were working their asses off, so to speak.
Don't mean to be a downer, but just want those who were too young (or didn't exist) and those who were to far to live the life to understand that the Glory Days were not always so glorious. The ones on the street were the living a very very hard life for our pleasure.

yes it was rough back then.
they sucked to survive, as it were.
you had to sell yourself, and you had to sell your feminine soul to get the cash to see another day in nyc. and you took a risk each time. never knowing who you were getting into the car with, getting arrested, getting sick, getting robbed. Remember the nut case who did a drive by shooting at the bar "sneakers" with an Uzi! Stories of kids surviving by cooking the spoiled meat they found in the dumpsters on the meatr market.
How many other places existed at that time that would accept them for what they were, transgender people, born male, wanting to be female, treated like freaks, stepped on like trash. the street was tough, but they were tougher cause they did what they had to do to survive, while we who had our 9 to 5 jobs and cash in our pockets could walk among them and enjoy the show from a nice safe distance. I sit and wonder sometines how many of these smiling laughing girls survived to this day, 25 years later.
