When I'm not making porn and hanging out with sex workers I spend a good deal of my time hanging out with other musicians and making music. I always feel so self conscious about my voice, which I feel is pretty but not necessarily 100% undetectable that I'm TS. I get especially self conscious when I'm singing in front of other musicians who don't know me very well.

Often times because of this I just accompany other people on the piano or stick to playing classical music. It's been especially challenging since my trach shave as I can't quite hit some of the high notes I was able to just a few months ago. I keep hoping that my vocal chords will strengthen soon, as I find it frustrating losing part of my range.

Are there any other girls out there who are musically inclined, who try and perform in settings where they are not out? Do you pass? Speaking is one thing, but trying to sing is another thing entirely.

My two cents play like Rock Band or the New Guitar Hero games and do vocals. It's fun and might help you reclaim your range. Then when your confident show off those pipes. :)

Do the musicians know that you are TS? If they do then you shouldn't get self conscious. I have seen your videos and you sound like a female to me. I guess singing is a different story? I don't know.

Try not to let it hold you back Mandy. You're obviously a very artistic/creative person, have fun with it. I look forward to hearing what you create. Best of luck. Xx

I play the piano and sing, so I have no problem working on my range. It's not really a lack of confidence either.

I have so many friends who are amazing musicians, and I often times end up making music with people who I don't necessarily want to be out to. Not because they will react negatively, but because I don't want that to be part of the equation.

Also, just because I'm self conscious about it doesn't mean I let it stop me from playing music with other people.

Mandy, you have great taste in music. You ought to put out a CD sometime in the future. Sasha Grey has her own little music project on the side and if she can do it, so can you.

Maybe someday in the future I'll start writing my own songs, at which point I might do something like that. For now I'm just happy to play with my friends when their bands tour through town, or when I'm visiting them.

Pass. yes. Sound GOOD? Getting there, but it takes a lot more work. I can be seen attempting to reclaim my singing career at karaoke at a local gay bar sometimes, but I don't dare try singing anywhere else but my shower... and I've been told I have a broadcast quality speaking voice. Singing is hard enough, but extending your range enough to broaden your repertoire? Priceless!

Yeah, I meant sometime down the line as another creative outlet. Small independent label, that kind of deal. But sometimes it's just fun to play music with your friends no strings attached or no ego involved.

Some women dont have that high range, so they call the altos. Some women's voices go even lower as they age, then they are called contraltos. In the small choir I work with, the lowest voice woman sings with the tenor section. I say that as long as the notes you hit, do not have the 'bass' lower throat undertones. You will be ok. And if someone questions you about your range, you could say something about an operation effecting your vocal range if you want.

But with most people, it's the quality that is the most important. If you love it, do it. That is the most important thing of all.

I have a request that you play some piano (classical) and post the link here uploaded on zshare.net as an MP3 file. I play some keyboards, wtih piano being my favorite.

On Great and Mariviloso Mandy.
You play piano so you undoubtedly can play octaves with ease.
When thou can play octaves on guitar like Wes Montgomery, thou will appreciate why guitarists are often found in mental institutions.

I could see it happening in the future. I have so many amazingly talented friends who are musicians (some independent and some that are very successful) that sometimes I get intimidated and feel like I should just stick to porn. I'm very lucky though that most of my friends who are musicians are very down to earth and supportive. It's always really encouraging when musicians I admire compliment me, it has helped me to feel more comfortable playing in public. Even more so, having friends who are trans musicians has really taught me alot.

I think it is likely that I may end up doing occasional songs with friends when they record albums and want backing vocals or piano, that doesn't seem far-fetched at all.

I can understand music driving a musician insane. I've been playing some pieces for almost 15 years and still haven't mastered them. Chopin and Rachmaninoff occasionally bring me to the very brink of losing my mind (not to mention the unfortunate bystanders who are forced to listen to me practice)

I know that there are many women with beautiful husky voices, and I don't feel like I need to constantly sing soprano. I just get very self-conscious about my voice (and what it sounds like in my head and what it sounds like to others is very different) and wonder if I'm outing myself by singing. It just feels safer sometimes to be an accompanist, or really drunk.

I think sometime in the not too distant future I will probably film some sort of soft core video of me playing Chopin's Nocturnes in lingerie that I will put up on my website, maybe some of it will end up on Youtube. I will let you know if that happens. :)
