Bout to take a trip which requires me to drive hundreds of miles across the desert in Nevada.

Any advice for music that would be apropos?

So far:

Loggins & Messina - Pathways to Glory
Pink Floyd - Sheep
CSN - Dark Star
Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home
Robert Plant - Big Log
Steely Dan - Dirty Work
Allman Bros - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die

Dark, brooding and perfect for a long desolate ride

Suggestions welcome and needed

Not a deadhead, but 'Jack Straw' would be perfect...there's also a live version with Bruce Hornsby that is stellar....and no one's mentioned 'A Horse With No Name' by America yet? I can picture the drive just thinking about those two tunes....

The ultimate late night driving song....especially if you happen to be either drink/drug addled or both...

'Willin' by Little Feat...

And I love Steely Dan, but 'Do It Again' would be a better choice than yours under the circumstances, IMO...and maybe even better yet, the lesser known and hauntingly bittersweet 'Here at the Western World'....

Good suggestions.

Steely Dan actually gets its own section on the ipod but gonna add Do it Again and Don't Take Me Alive for the desert.

Jix, that was O, Ed and the Jiz.

America - Horse With No Name

I've been riding through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to get out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name,
Cause there ain't no one there to give you no pain
Lalala....

You need upbeat driving music that'll hold your attention & keep you awake. Ok, here's some oddball stuff.

Dave Dudley or Taj Mahal ~ 6 days on the road

Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen ~ Lookin' at the world through a windshield

David Bromberg ~ New Lee Highway blues

Little Feat ~ Feet don't fail me now

War ~ City country city

Marshall Tucker Band ~ This old cowboy

Grateful Dead ~ Cumberland blues

Tim Buckley ~ Get on top

Jeff Beck ~ Scatterbrain

Sentenced - No one there

Fields of Nephilim - Dust
Flowing Tears - The Weeping Song (better then the Nick Cave version imho)
Illuminate - Der Torweg

The Kovenant - Mannequin
Mandragora Scream - Cryin' Clouds
My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel
Theatre of Tragedy - A Distance There Is

The Eagles' "Hotel California".

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spTtowVTVLg

"Life in the Fast Lane" on the same album too.

Other driving songs I love are "Motorcycle Emptiness" (Manic Street Preachers) and "She Sells Sanctuary" (The Cult).

I tried to keep it limited to stuff that normal everyday people would have a decent chance of liking. Those last two are among the most underrated songs there are in those genres.

That music is dark Sarah but not really what I am looking for in the desert.

More like the Doors, The End.

Music that evokes images of the desert in your minds eye.

I'm not familiar with the last two on your list. I'll have to check around the net and see what I can come up with.

If you're at all familiar with krautrock, there's a ton of great driving music from that genre.

The three NEU! albums
Can's Tago Mago
Any Kraftwerk album
Harmonia's Deluxe

All have that motorik beat with dark overtones.

Last time I went cross country it was all about Moby's album Play and Train's Drops of Jupiter.

Moby's disc was especially powerful at night - invoking a spiritual, supernatural vibe.

Train's disc is just pure Americana - it definitely makes you feel like you're in a movie about a road trip and it's upbeat but moody like the Moby record.

Oh and of course: Bob Seger - Roll Me Away - it evokes that scene from Armageddon where the team gets a night of freedom before the mission. ;)

The desert, huh...

Santana ~ Incident at Neshabur

Santana ~ Caravanserai (the whole album)

Grateful Dead ~ Mexicali blues

Duke Ellington or Art Blakey ~ Caravan

Van Morrison ~ Caravan

There was an instrumental "Caravan" done by one of the beach guitar bands of the '60s, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one.

You're not driving a caravan, are you?

Marshall Tucker Band ~ Desert skies

Ray Stevens ~ Ahab the Arab :)

Hell, "Desert" is in the title.
