Quentin, Getz lead Chisox

CHICAGO (AP)—A trade for Jake Peavy(notes) dominated their pre-game thoughts and when they fell behind the New York Yankees 3-0 in the first inning Friday night, it appeared the Chicago White Sox were in for a long night.

They were using a spot starter in D.J. Carrasco(notes) after Clayton Richard(notes) had been shipped to the Padres as part of the Peavy deal. And they were playing one of the best teams in the American League.

“Going into the game with the trade and Clayton planning on starting today, you never know what is going to come of the game,” White Sox second baseman Chris Getz(notes) said.

But the White Sox made sure they followed the big trade with a big win.

Carlos Quentin(notes) homered and had a go-ahead RBI double and Getz delivered a two-run, bases-loaded single in a 10-5 victory over the Yankees.

So did the trade give the White Sox a boost?

“Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. I think we were sad to see Clayton go, he has such a bright future and he’s a good friend of mine,” Getz said. “But we’re bringing in a very good player and there is no doubt he’s going to help us out. … I don’t think anybody was really anticipating much and then all of a sudden at the last minute we make a huge move. I guess when you think things are going to get complacent, something like that happens. “

The White Sox’s offense was not complacent.

Chicago broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Quentin’s RBI double off David Robertson(notes) (1-1). The White Sox added four in the seventh off Alfredo Aceves(notes). Getz hit the two-out single on an 0-2 pitch. Jayson Nix(notes) stole home on a double steal after Getz broke from first, and Scott Podsednik(notes) added a hard-hop RBI single with Getz racing home from second.

“We started 3-0 in the first inning against New York and we came back pretty quickly,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “We were being aggressive the best we could. Everytime when the offense struggles and you get something going with the speed, that helps.”

Tony Pena(notes) (1-0), acquired from the Diamondbacks earlier this month, got his first victory for the White Sox with two innings of scoreless relief.

“We just didn’t execute,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s frustrating. we didn’t play well. … The 0-2 hit was the one that hurt us the most because he looked like he was going to get out of it and we were going to be fine. But he didn’t get the ball where he wanted to.”

Carrasco gave up three quick runs in the first.

Derek Jeter(notes) grounded to first but beat Carrasco to the bag for an infield single, Johnny Damon(notes) singled and Teixeira followed with an RBI double to right center. After Alex Rodriguez(notes) hit an RBI grounder, Teixeira scored when Hideki Matsui(notes) hit a single past Getz with the infield playing in.

Yankees starter Sergio Mitre(notes) gave up three two-out hits in the first and a run on singles by Jim Thome(notes) and Paul Konerko(notes) and an RBI double by A.J. Pierzynski(notes).

“Tonight it seemed like everything was dragging,” Damon said. “Once Mitre gave up those couple runs, we couldn’t get into our dugout fast enough. We were standing out there for lots of time and they definitely picked up some momentum.”

Gordon Beckham(notes) hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Jim Thome followed with a two-run single, putting the White Sox ahead 4-3 in the second. Quentin hit his 10th homer for a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third.

Eric Hinske(notes), who hadn’t played in the previous seven games, hit a two-run homer to tie it in the fourth.

Mitre went three innings, giving up seven hits and five runs. Carrasco lasted four, yielding nine hits and five runs.

NOTES: Damon made a spectacular catch of Quentin’s liner in the seventh. Damon reached up and snagged the liner before his momentum caused him to hit the wall front first. He still managed to hang onto the ball. … Rodriguez made a base-running error in the ninth when he was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double with the Yankees trailing by five runs. … The Yankees expect to have newly acquired Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) in uniform for Saturday’s game.. … Peavy is scheduled to join the White Sox on Saturday.
