The few black Muslims that I met while in the Navy were very cool and self-composed(I think Farrakhan was still singing calypso then), although they seemed every bit as robotic as the Mormon sailors onboard the Shitty Kitty...of course all we had to do is introduce the Mormon lads to a few nights of drinking and barely legal filapina whores to make them forget all about their Mormon indocrination and be ready to marry the next bar girl who sat next to one of the poor schmucks...

There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his profit. If you believe that, you're Muslim. There is no official body, catechism or entry into the religion. Islam is what its believers make of it.

Uhh... not exactly, so far as I understand, you accept Islam, you get the Quaran with it, and, in addition to other things, it's a manual for spreading Islam by oppression, economic sanctions, and force, if necessary. Jizya, i.e., taxation on non-Muslims, prohibition against non-Muslims owning horses and weapons, and the general three-tiered system of laws and rights, i.e., Muslims, Jews and Christians (people of the "The Book"), and everyone else. All apparently designed to make life as a dhimmi in a Muslim state sufficiently uncomfortable, unprofitable, and downright dangerous to make all but the most devout convert.

My read is: the ones who are promoting Islam as a religion of peace, harmony, and tolerance are either referring to a splinter group from Original Recipe Islam, a tad uninformed, or full of shit. It's peace and harmony, so long as they're in the minority, or you're a good obedient Muslim. Once Islam takes the state, then everyone else gets as much weight as the state and its thugs can bring to bear.

And, oh yeah, Trish, I'd mention the whole "profit," "prophet" thing, but in this case I think your spelling works, too.

Most religions, the successful ones, anyway, come down to the green. Peace and love only get you but so far.

Personally, I’m an atheist and I’m pretty much appalled by what I read in the Bible. I’ve considerably less knowledge of the Qur’an. I know that BrendaQ here at HA has posted some beautiful passages from it. But I’ve also seen quotes from it that rival Leviticus in its dispicable hatred.

I'm not sure belief in higher beings qualifies one as a theist. What's "higher" mean? Part of the problem with theism is how slippery it is to define. When I say I'm an atheist I merely mean I don't believe in any of the God's in the pantheon of usual suspects.

Interesting thread... somehow I didn't expect to reach teletubbie though from islam though...

On converting from way back at the beginning. A lot of people are just looking for a path that leads to acceptance. If they have tried using their own judgment and its lead them no place good, they will start to accept the judgment of others, if it comes with a ready made group of supporters.

Short cuts to respect of others and a feeling of success and worth are powerful stuff.
