Typically I'm a "cheap glasses I bought at the beach" kinda guy,
but last year I went in search of some good sunglasses. I found most
very boring (compared to the el cheapos). Saw a few I liked-- some Maui
Jim styles. In the end I just got some Oakley gascans.

People need to learn how to market to me--- I was at Solstice in O'town and they had a hot chick dressed very nice, wearing cool sunglasses, suggesting glasses for me. I would've bought the whole store.
Then I come home and there's some geek in jeans wearing bi-focals. "May I help you?". Fuck no.

I can't say that I have a preference as to brand.

I do have some prescription ones, and also some inexpensive ones
for loosing.

I have many, many pairs as I like to color coordinate, and also as
I wear them year round, cause my eyes are sensitive to light and
dust.

If you listen to the manufacturers the biggest reason for buying good sunglasses is that cheap ones don't block the sunrays they say they do. They actually allow your pupils to open, yet expose your eyes to more harmful rays. Thus they damage your eyes instead of protecting them.
Had a friend say you can tell an expensive pair of glasses from cheap because of the fit... That's bullshit! Some of the best feeling glasses I ever had were $8 and the absolute worst were those $80 RayBans Hawk used to wear on "Vegas" (I know, I'm old. Oh shit. It was "Spenser for hire". I'm really old!).
If in fact cheap sunglasses do damage, that's the only reason I can see to pay hundreds of dollars for an accessory that will eventually get misplaced or broken!

I've owned the same pair of Maui Jim's for 5 years. I refuse to go out in sunlight without them, owned Oakley's before the Maui's and the polarization on them fails in comparison. Best sunglasses I've ever owned.
