Call for action: www.tranny-alert.com
UPDATE:

Checking at this moment (June 27, 2009, 12:00 PST), www.tranny-alert.com is offline. Whether their site was pulled by Blogger, or they strategically retreated, this is a victory.

Thank you everyone who saw this site as the hate it was. That it was not just trans women, but a diverse cross-section of straight, gay, transgender, and non-trans (or cisgender) people who brought it down gives me hope for a world in which trans women are not punchlines for jokes or victims of violence (and if people cannot or chose not to see how those two things are related they are either very privileged or very clueless). Hate is hate, no matter how many justifications you put up.

The reality of many trans women's lives is, tragically, violence and death at the hands of those who usually have their hate justified by our culture. The recent coverage of the trial of Angie Zapata's murderer and the upcoming trial for the murder of Lateisha Green highlight just a few among the many acts of violence perpetrated against trans women, and especially against trans women of colour.

Thanks again to everyone who re-Tweeted, complained to Blogger, or engaged in this discussion. To whoever was behind tranny-alert? We're watching, and we're not putting up with bald-faced hatred like yours again.

The original call for action:

From www.tranny-alert.com. This is not just appropriative or transphobic, it directly threatens the safety and privacy of trans women:

Our site cannot survive without your submissions!
Spot a tranny or suspected tranny around town? See a hot tranny mess? Observe a guidette in New Jersey with tranny style? Notice trannies on TV/Radio/Billboards? Find yourself at a Lady Gaga concert? WE WANT TO KNOW!

Remember, if you spot a tranny: snap your fingers, snap a pic, and e-mail those photos to: mayday@tranny-alert.com !

In light of the murders of trans women such as Gwen Araujo, Angie Zapata and others, it is indefensible to run a website that requests readers submit photos of trans women (or people they've read as trans women) without their consent and publicly out them. This site threatens the safety of every person they post a photo of. Please spread the word and take action.
