Maine's Gay Marriage Foes Caught Lying About Petitions

Opponents of gay marriage are busily collecting signatures to overturn Maine's new marriage equality law by means of a voter referendum. As in other places, homobigots have shown that they're willing to go to any lengths to prevent same-sex couples from receiving the same legal protections and benefits that are given to their heterosexual counterparts.

28114 From the Sun Journal: Gerard Caron walked into the Auburn Post Office and was met by a woman with a pair of clipboards. "This petition is against gay marriage and this other petition is to support gay marriage," she said, according to Caron. The Poland man said he asked her why there would be a petition to support something that already happened, referring to the petition "in support of" gay marriage. "She just kinda gave me a little grin and didn't say anything," he said. Then he looked at the two petitions and discovered they were identical - both were supporting the repeal of the same-sex marriage law... Caron said he spoke to a friend who had a similar experience at the Lewiston Post Office. Julie Flynn, deputy secretary of state, said her office has received calls from people concerned about the petitioning process...

I like the part where the woman just grins at the guy and doesn't respond to his question. This is how anti-equality forces operate. Convinced that their cause is just, they piously believe that deceit is forgivable. Right-wing Christians often claim that "homosexual behavior" is just another sin, like lying and cheating, and that we're all sinners. But of course their actions, in this and other instances, contradict that assertion. They clearly think that it's okay to lie to achieve their goals.

Fundies love to quote scripture that condemns same-sex relationships as "an abomination." But they don't seem to care that, according to the Bible, lying is also an abomination. Not only that, God supposedly hates liars. Proverbs 6:16 says that, "six things doth the LORD hate" and one of the things listed is "a lying tongue." Then there's Proverbs 12:22 - "Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight."

There's no "true dealing" going on with Maine's self-righteous petition gatherers. Their hatred of gay marriage has blinded them to their own sins.

Could you trust anyone who idolizes the weapon used to kill their deity?

Crosses are a symbol of torture, unjust execution, and intolerance. They were designed by the Romans to inflict as painful of a death as possible. Not to simply get rid of political dissenters, but to strike terror into the entire communities where executions were committed.

It would be comparable to Gandhi or King's followers using guns & bullets to represent their movements... in a sense worse because of the comparatively merciful nature of efficient instruments of death such as guns.
