Chicago has become pretty dry and stale, and due to the recent 3 robberies in 1 month and nothing done about it was the straw that broke the camels back. I dont feel comfortable or safe in my own home anymore, and the show opportunitys are non-exsistant, the men aint shit, not even to console me in this hard time, and its been in the back of my mind for a few years to leave here and move to NYC. I have no family here and all my real friends and guys who's shoulders I cry on are all in NYC. I currantly pay $1100 for a 2 bedroom apartment with a parking space. I know something that size for that price is not possible in manhattan, but where could I go close to manhattan and get a space big enough for me and my drag wardrobe. The smallest I could get would be a 1 bedroom. I dont cook so I wouldnt need a huge kitchen, I dont drive so I'd have to be close to a train that gets me into Manhattan. My girlfriend lives in Bay Ridge, brooklyn, but I HATE that long ass train ride, especially after a show at Esco's or the Monster or dancing at one of Sunny's or Allanah's partys. How ts friendly is Jackson Heights or Astoria Queens? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I could grab my clothes and leave now I would.
I have 2 cats but I will find a good home for them before I leave. I wanted to save my money and get some work done, but the fear of coming home to an empty house and the depression from dealing with this in this dead ass city is more than I can handle. Any SERIOUS help would be appreciated. I also have a girlfriend in Jersy who will let me work out of her house to make money to move to NYC.

Jersey City or Hoboken is only 5 minutes on the PATH train to downtown.

if you moved here, i would be VERY VERY happy.

Jackson Hts and Astoria are very trans friendly. However the subway service from Manhattan to Queens at 3 or 4 am REALLY, REALLY sucks. :>(

i've actually been looking for apartments in NYC too, moving there in a couple of months. the neighborhood i'm leaning closest to moving to is east harlem. it's cheap compared to most other places on manhattan, and from what people are telling me the area is changing, it's not as crime riddled as you might immediately think. looking on a map it's really close to central park and all those billion dollar apartments, so how bad can it be? heh

the main selling point, for me at least, is that it's actually on the island. it doesn't seem too far from midtown and lower manhattan. i was looking at some places in queens and jersey too, but they seem a million miles away from the heart of the city.

well... 1100 will get you a lot more than before the crash... Boro Park, kensington, even bay ridge is not that far out there, and about $25-30 for a taxi. in my experience those part of queens are just as far.

Jersey City looks cute and is cheap, but you always are transfering trains and they run crappy late and on weekends, plus it's corrupt and depressing. and forget about parking there, really bad!

I own two one bedroom apartments in Jackson Heights and I get $1175 and $1250 for each of them. You can find a decent place in JHts for about 1200 with a 5 minute walk to a 12 minute subway ride to Manhattan.

Now thats something I can deal with. back in the day, say 2001 my girlfriend lived in Queens by Roosevelt but it was a bit ghetto, but nobody bothered us. Its just gonna be me and my drag, but I want a client friendly location. Kinda like why I piced the place i have now train and can acessable in a low key spot.

that part of jersey is pretty good, and the path puts you in the village quickly

For 1100, queens or bk are your next bet, but...........the rides into manhattan either on the train or cab can be long.

Big loss for us here losing you to New York.

Still think you are one of the funniest people I ever met and appreciated the times we all got to hang out.

I know your job is sorry to see you go as well.

As to getting your shit taken, I agree with whoever said for you to set up a cam and catch the little fucker red handed. Cops might not do anything but then you can have more ammo for your landlord to evict the motherfuckers.

Enjoy one more summer in Chicago b4 you break camp.

If you noticed I don't get into it with NY girls, we seem to relate and understand each other better, LOL. In all the years I been going to NY I only got into 1 incident and that girl didn't know who I knew. Other than that, I get life with the NYC dolls. I'm not shady or stuck up, and not the kind of girl to even be competitive. Shit I'm in the game to make my money just like they are. And when they are in Chicago, I help as much as I can. Jesica Host and a few other girls are my "smoking" buddies and we just smoke, go to the club and gag on the boys. I'm not really a drama queen unless a drama queen gets me started, as you guys have seen on here. And I'm glad to know you got my back too baby!

Well Ed ya know Chicago was already boring to me. I used to work 3-5 nights a week in clubs and made a HUGE investment in my stage wardrobe, and its all in the closet collecting dust. My passion in life never was escorting, it was doing shows. Thats dying out here in Chicago. I get 2 nights a month at cattle Call and 2 nights a month at Circuit and once in a blue moon a spot at the Baton. In NY, I can work in Manhattan, Queens and even Jersey, not to mention I even work sometimes in a show in Philly. I miss performing more than anything and I get antsy to get back to NY as often as I can. Now that my girl has her apartment in Jersy where I can go work a week then come back, I'll work and save up.
I wont be abled to move over night, so you guys got me for up until fall. I been needing this change for a while now, about 5 years, but I don't like change, the robberies were the wake up call to get my ass up outta here.
I'm known to be a creature of habit, LOL

Best of luck in your move, Vanessa. Personally, I prefer Chicago to NY (I lived in Lakeview for a while, before lights), but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Though you may dislike NYCTA (No You Can't Take Any), SIRTOA (Shall I Run Today Or Anytime), and PATH (Pathetic Attempt Towards History), they do get you most anywhere in the NY/Newark environs for small investment. Car services are better, but only optimal in the wee hours, when you aren't paying for traffic time.

I think my personality is a better match in NYC than Chicago. I get more life there anyway and sometimes people see me there so often they ask me if I had moved there yet. I don't know what the fuck made me stay here all this time. But things happen for a reason. Now I am going with job training and certifications. Plus I made alot of friends along the way. Humility and not being shady get you farther than you realize in life. I have a bit of job security, and I began to notice all my real friends are in NYC anyways. Chicago just became a place I exsisted and not lived. I actually would like to become a social worker to promote SAFER and legal transitions for ts of ALL ages. Some older girls don't know whats available to them and younger girls can avoid drama and issues that we had to deal with because we didnt know our options. Now there won't be any excuses. I have legal knowledge of trans issues on many levels. And I have extensive health knowledge as well as counseling training.

My girlfriends, my webmaster and well wishers are all pointing in the direction of Queens cuz as my girlfriend said, Bitch you can jump your lazy ass in a cab, get to work and not go broke doing it. I'm going to search Craigslist for now and set up some go-see's for when I'm in manhattan next month. Good rental history and a good credit score have always helped me in the past. Or if you really want to be close to NYC without paying the expensive 'tag' price..try looking around Hoboken (cool trendy neighborhood with lots of small shops, bars, cafe's etc. or Jersey City (Grove Street area) by Pavonia Newport mall/exchange place (also a nice quiet neighborhood). It's relatively cheaper yet 'close' and overlooking the city. ;)

It was this punk that moved in last year. He robbed the baasement first, got away with it and then he robbed me a total of 3 times. It was an inside job, the kids father agreed it was him and said let the police handle it. I guess the police got him the other day on ANOTHER robbey, but he wasnt charged in mine, go figure. That bullshit makes me sick to my stomach every day I wake up here. The new locks and bars dont make this a safe home just a locked up box. I dont want to live here anymore. Chicago is so lame and dead, and that was my sign to move on and do something with my life.

Don't be fooled. NYC is still very expensive. Rental prices have not come down so be prepared for that sad reality. You might want to look uptown like Spanish Harlem or Inwood....there are still deals to be found up there. Basically, the whole city is TV friendly but if you lived in the Upper East Side, you might get a few funny looks.
Queens is getting pricier. A few months ago, the New Yorker had a big article on Sunnyside Queens and as a result, prices have begun to climb, so do your research. You might want to spend some time walking around different neighborhoods. Some buildings only put a sign out front instead of advertising in newspapers or Craigslist, for example.
Good luck with the move and welcome to the greatest city on Earth.

all the Wall Streeters, formerly overpaid now unemployed, are fleeing manhatten and driving up prices in Sunnyside and Astoria cuz they wanna try to stay close to the city

thats why I'm thinking the Bronx could be the next real estate bull market

Queens has the most affordable neighborhoods that are safe with good subway access into manhattan

Jackson Heights
Woodside
Sunnyside
Elmhurst
Astoria

I live in Astoria and train rides into Midtown run around 30 minute door to door. I usually don't take the train late night and the cab from Midtown isn't more than $20 with a tip.

alyssa speaks the truth.

that part of jersey is pretty good, and the path puts you in the village quickly

For 1100, queens or bk are your next bet, but...........the rides into manhattan either on the train or cab can be long.

Cab rides to the neighborhoods mention by Flabby are not long. I've never had a problem getting a cab to take me. Neither train ride, Path or MTA, would be long but the wait for a train can be long late at night especially if you have to change trains.

Harlem (west Harlem) is a great place to live for the price. It's about the same price as the trendy brooklyn areas like williamsburg and brooklyn heights - but it's in Manhattan.

it already is.
The line of harlem is being pushed north of central park north (if you ever driven down lex or 2nd ave, when you hit 100th street the scenery changes DRAMATICALLY). My neighbors house just went for 500k. in a recession.
Guess folks wanna be near the staduim versus bummin it on the subway.

Rents most certianly *HAVE* come down both in Manhattan and the surrounding areas/outer boroughs. The Sunday New York Times had has several articles on the matter over the past few months.

Even such formally "hot" areas such as the Financial District and Tribeca can have deals. However these may be in condo buildings that are either renting out units that did not sell, or owners of the unit renting.

Now "down" is not back to the high hudreds, but one may be able to find a studio for around $1200, and one bedrooms from $1500 or so. Check CL and the like for an idea of what is going on.

In my area one can see lots of empty apartments and seems almost every weekend another moving truck in my street taking someone else away. Persons without a job can't pay rent, even a reduced one.

NYC landlords typically like to see a monthly income that is 3x or 4x rent. Some landlords may be willing to deal, but most are careful in terms of doing a credit check, employment verification, wage verfication, court search and the like. For those that do qualify there are deals such as reduced rent, first month rent free, landlord paying broker's fee, and the like.

What one will suggest is that if one plans on doing any sort of "work" from home, then choose one's building carefully. Incall hooking has become so widespread and known that people know what to look for. Some don't care, others will be on the phone to the PoPo everytime anyone comes to your apartment.

Some areas of the bronx are good some bad. heres the good list, Moris park, near the 5 train. Pelham bay near the 6 train Castle hill near the 6 train. throgs neck, not near any train lol, but alot of busses;) Hope this helps.
