Its a blessing that Turkey wants to join the EU..

Not really.

The Turkish Army wanted to clean house and purge the government of all the islamic fundamentalists a few years ago.

Basically the fanatics are trying to come into power legally in turkey by running for political positions, and then while in office try to enact varying amounts if Islamic law.

The Turkish Army said "no, we're stayed secular, and if we have to, while come in and remove you all with armed force."

You know what the EU said?

The EU said that if Turkey wants to join the EU in the future, the Turkish Army has to stand down and not do any armed coupe'dtots. EU's position was that the democratic process must be respected, even when the democratic process elects terrorists into political offices.

Moral of the story: Doesn't matter if its done through the democratic process or not, if a given country is electing tailaban, hamas, or Hezbollah radicals into office, that's a big problem that has to be dealt with.
