BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 25 Purdue wrestling team surrendered a late surge to 18th-ranked rival Indiana en route to a 21-12 loss on Friday night. The Boilermakers fall to 11-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference action, while Indiana is now 14-4-1 (1-2-1 Big Ten).

Purdue won four of the 10 matches on the night, winning at 133, 149, 165 and 184 pounds. Seventh-ranked senior Jake Patacsil improved to 28-3 on the year and 3-0 in Big Ten Duals, moving into a tie for eighth all-time at Purdue with 110 career wins.

The Boilermakers found themselves in a quick hole as fifth-ranked Hoosier junior Angel Escobedo snagged a quick takedown and pinned Purdue sophomore Akif Eren in 1:50. Boilermaker rookie Carson Beebe started the climb out, posting his first career Big Ten Dual victory in the form of a 5-2 victory over IU freshman Matt Ortega. Beebe bounced back from surrendering a first-period takedown to ride Ortega through the whole second period and then snare a third-period takedown of his own for the win.

The return of Boilermaker sophomore Juan Archuleta was bittersweet at 141 pounds as he led Indiana senior Andrae Hernandez early, but gave up a pair of takedowns in the second frame en route to a 5-2 loss. The action stayed close at 149 pounds as Patacsil had a tough time turning Indiana junior Nick Walpole and needed a riding-time point to earn a 5-4 decision and cut the Indiana lead to 9-6.

No. 13 157-pound sophomore Kurt Kinser pushed the Hoosiers' advantage back to six points, earning a 5-3 decision over Purdue sophomore Colton Salazar, but No. 16 Boilermaker sophomore Luke Manuel quickly returned the deficit to three with a 3-0 shutout over sophomore Paul Young at 165 pounds. Purdue nearly tied the match at 174 pounds as junior Nick Corpe pushed Indiana junior Trevor Perry to the wire, but came up just short in a 3-2 decision.

Annual controversy set in at 184 pounds as Purdue sophomore A.J. Kissel displayed a dominating performance on top en route to a 16-2 major decision. After a quick takedown by Kissel to start the match, a very confusing first period followed. Despite numerous attempts to run an arm bar and turn Indiana junior Seth Parker, Kissel was hit with multiple stall warnings, giving the Hoosiers an early point. Kissel rode Parker through the entire second period, earning a stall point of his own and posting five back points to secure an 8-1 advantage. Parker took the top position in the final period but did very little as he gave up a second stall point and then a two-point stall call, one shy of forfeiting the match. Kissel reversed Parker on an attempt to release him and then cut him before snaring another takedown. The original stalling call ending up costing Kissel the technical fall and a team point, and another team point in arguments with the officials, resulting in a 15-12 Indiana advantage with two matches to go.

The match was all Indiana from there on out as the Hoosiers snagged takedowns in the last 15 seconds of both matches at 197 and 285 pounds. Freshman Matt Powless topped No. 13 Purdue sophomore Logan Brown at 197, 4-3, and junior Nathan Everhart took a 3-1 decision from Purdue junior Chris Kasten.
