Eh up! A 70s music thread! Excellent!

I don't have a "favourite" 70s track: there was too much good music made back then for me to even begin to choose. So I'll just post a couple of vids to start off with...

A good little song from THE no-nonsense rock band:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1iR2Wi3u5o

Silver Machine by Hawkwind (I could have posted the original footage of the band, but this vid has bikes in it - yay! - and the sound quality's good)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iqQEqSc7qk

And if you all behave I might post Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii

I wasn't even a teenager when this song came out. "Run Thru The Jungle" by CCR and a few others..
It haunts me of my childhood because the Vietnam war took some loved ones away from me..

Check this free site out..

Now your're talking the times of my youth, so unfortunately I can't pick just one.

So how about a Top 25 (some are obscure, I know):

Boston: Piece of Mind
Frampton: Do You Feel Like I Do
Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Aerosmith: Toys in the Attic
Led Zep: Kashmir
Allman Brothers: One Way Out
Deep Purple: Burn
Edgar Winter: Hangin Around
Foghat: Fool For The City
Rush: In The End
Grand Funk: Into The Sun
Heart: Little Queen
Thin Lizzy: Cowboy Song
Kiss: Strutter (live)
Lou Reed: Sweet Jane (live)
Nazareth: Hair of The Dog
Robin Trower: Bridge of Sighs
Rolling Stones: Tumbling Dice
Ted Nugent: Cat Scratch Fever
Uriah Heep: Sweet Lorraine
UFO: Doctor Doctor
Van Halen: Ain't Talking Bout Love
Pat Benatar: Heartbreaker
Judas Priest: Head Out To The Highway
April Wine: Roller

It was a Top 100, I trimmed it a bit.

I agree with you on the Stones, and with many others on here regarding other 70's hits. Great to hear The Boss, BOC, and Robin Trower(among others) mentioned by people also. As far as BOC goes I would add my personal favorite 'The Last Days of May', particularly the live version where Buck Dharma rips the song a new asshole with his guitar solo.

BUT DUDE...'Chevy Van'? THAT HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE CHEESIEST SONGS EVER RECORDED! It's right up there with 'Billy, Don't Be a Hero' and 'Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast'! Not something I'd expect to hear from a Stones fan, but it would be a good starter for a cheesiest/lamest songs ever thread...

Nice!! Other good ones from Exile:
Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Shine a Light, and of course, Happy

Great ones from Sticky Fingers:
Dead Flowers (one of my all-time favorites!!), Can't you hear me Knock'in, Moonlight Mile

Other favorite Stones' tunes:
Hand of Fate (another all-time favorite), Memory Motel (the Stones did a cool live version w/ Dave Mathews), You Got the Silver (my favorite Keith song).

Ok, I could go on... but I won't!!

Just thinking of some other's by other artists:
Life on the Road (Kinks), Dirty Work (Steely Dan), Turn to Stone (Joe Walsh or James Gang), Still Alive and Well (Johnny Winter)

OK, and how's this for obscure? "Never Been to Spain"

Alas, I must concede your point. Although these songs chronologically are from the 70's (the above tunes are '77 - '79) the sound they introduced has been historically linked to the 80's.

For me, as a college DJ during this period, this stuff ensured that a great decade ended on a high note; just prior to this the giants of the period were churning out pure dross (Do You Think I'm Sexy?, Minute By Minute? The Loco-Motion?) New Wave clearly saved not only the 70's, but rock music in general, IMHO.

I see where you're coming from. I remember seeing Elvis Costello in a small venue in San Diego on his first US tour, not long after 'My Aim Is True' came out. Awesome show! The "backup acts" were Nick Lowe with Rockpile and Mink Deville!! As far as great music goes, I haven't seen too many shows that were better, and I've seen a lot of them!
