(CNN) -- President Bush made a farewell visit Sunday to Baghdad, Iraq, where he met with Iraqi leaders and was targeted by an angry Iraqi man, who jumped up and threw shoes at Bush during a news conference.
President Bush, left, ducks a thrown shoe as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki tries to protect him Sunday.

Among Muslims, throwing shoes at someone, or sitting so that the bottom of a shoe faces another person, is considered an insult.

The man was dragged out screaming after throwing the shoes. Bush ducked, and the shoes, thrown one at a time, sailed past his head during the news conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in his palace in the heavily fortified Green Zone.

As the man continued to scream from another room, Bush said: "That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know."

Bush had been lauding the conclusion of the security pact with Iraq as journalists looked on.

Bush landed at Baghdad International Airport on Sunday and traveled by helicopter to meet with President Jalal Talabani and his two vice presidents at Talabani's palace outside the Green Zone.

It marked the first time he has been outside the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad without being on a military base.

The visit was Bush's fourth since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Afterward, Talabani praised his U.S. counterpart as a "great friend for the Iraqi people" and the man "who helped us to liberate our country and to reach this day, which we have democracy, human rights, and prosperity gradually in our country." Video Watch President Bush and Iraq's president walk the red carpet ŧ

Talabani said he and Bush, who is slated to leave office next month, had spoken "very frankly and friendly" and expressed the hope that the two would remain friends even "back in Texas."

For his part, Bush said he had come to admire Talabani and his vice presidents "for their courage and for their determination to succeed."

As the U.S. and Iraqi national anthems played and Iraqi troops looked on, he and the Iraqi president walked along a red carpet.
Don't Miss

Bush's trip was to celebrate the conclusion of the security pact with Iraq, called the Strategic Framework Agreement and the Status of Forces Agreement, the White House said.

Bush called the passage of the pact "a way forward to help the Iraqi people realize the blessings of a free society."

Bush said the work "hasn't been easy, but it has been necessary for American security, Iraqi hope, and world peace."

In remarks to reporters, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, who traveled with Bush, described the situation in Iraq as "in a transition."

"For the first time in Iraq's history and really the first time in the region, you have Sunni, Shia and Kurds working together in a democratic framework to chart a way forward for their country," he said.

People underestimate Bush but he's got some tricks.

Whether you like him or not, you got to give the guy credit. He's shown that he is alert, agile and doesn't let small things stop him. After this incident, he went on with the conference and the business he traveled for.

Really a nice dodge. Looks like he's done it hundred times. :D By the way Maliki didn't move at all.

HAHAHA...unless Bush pardons him.

If he was in the US, he would probably get life, or the death penalty for using a deadly weapon against a US President in a time of war. :D

Truly, that guy was dumb. He wanted his 15 seconds of fame, so he got it. Let him now pay the high interest debt he created for himself.

If Bush is smart this Guy will be let go after a quick interview without coffee and a slap. As he would want to show in the 'new free Iraq' you can throw a shoe and not be murdered or have your own family murdered as would probably happen under Saddam. Sadly we are talking about Bush. And Iam concerned this guy is right now nekkid and having his privates mocked by a splitarse us army soldier.

Could be worse could have been a rotten egg or an explosive device.

I don't think any violence is appropriate against any sitting President...whether it were Clinton, Bush, or when Obama sits behind that podium. This could have easily been much more dangerous objects that could have harmed any number of others in the room...Remember that when Obama has to sit up there and explain away why he's keeping troops in Iraq after all his promises of change, and why he put war hawks like Clinton in his cabinet.

No I was against the surge in Iraq but Saddam was a scumbag so these people are better off without a leader who killed his 2 son in laws, wifes brother and Kurds and tortured many people.

I am not defending Bush as I stated above the guy will go down as the worst President, he destroyed this fucking country, also I was against the surge.

My point is American politics going foward needs to stop getting involved and giving aid to other countries . Also I wasn't born in America but I am dual citizen and whoever represents this country like him or hate him still have to support them. Hopefully Obama can help us out of this mess.

I do not shit on America. If I did, I wonīt come on this board. Funny from you to bring out something that happened here over 60 years ago. Both Germany and Austria faced their history and Nazis are the biggest shame for both countries. You can get jailed here for openly worshipping Hitler national-socialism or denying the Holocaust while lots of Americans celebrate mass murderers and war criminals as national heroes. General Custer was portrayed as a romantic hero in 40ies/50iesī Hollywood Westerns, racial segregation was "normal" in American society, the fundaments of the US base upon genocide, slavery and exploitation. The reason why America entered WWII is the Japanese on Pearl Harbour, not their care for Jews. Another reason was the fear from Germany. A country with a racist society fighting against fascism and for freedom? Yes, my ass. The Confederation flag is still present on flags of some Southern states. Do I have to mention what this flag stands for? Morgan Freeman, a Mississippi native, started a campaign to remove the Confederate flag and failed because "itīs part of tradition and history". Famous antisemites and business partners or fans of the Nazis like Henry Ford and Walt Disney are "symbols" of the American dream.
Europe is grateful for Americaīs contribution in freeing this continent from the Nazi scum and this will never be forgotten. But, today, invading countries that are no danger for the US makes no sense. South American hopes like Salvador Allende and Che Guevara were assassinated by the CIA and fascist regimes installed. You obiously donīt know enough about your history. The list goes on like the war against Vietnam, Korea etc. Read a book.

I don't need a book to read about the past of American politics, but like you said Europeans are grateful for America in WWII.

You left out Reagan sending troops to Lebanon where 230 marines were killed, why were we there or Clinton's fuck ups with Somalia and Kosovo.

American needs to do what the EU does sit back and worry about their own. However I lost many friends in 9/11 and would luv to see Bin laden bring back to Manhattan and dropped off at any local Fire Department.

Funny when Euro trash tries to shit on America.

Actually if the United States had remained neutral (neutrality was just a bullshit line to get elected, Wilson was an interventionist... Wilson's top aid, Colonel House met with the British to plan a US entrance in the event of a likely German victory, submarine warfare was just the excuse for intervention);*

1- Germany would have won, there would have been no US Marines to stop the 1918 offensive. Long term ramifications: no raise of the nazis, no "November criminals" for Hitler to rally against.

2- Germany would have been able to pull off Operation Schlubstein. This would have;
A- created a series of satellite states on Germany's east side, as was originally intended with Finland (that's why the Kaiser tried to establish a monarchy with one of his relatives in control).
B- stopped the communist revolution before it really got anywhere (Lenin himself wrote that the only reason why the revolution was succeeding was because the German military hadn't come into Petrograd to put it down with force). Long term ramifications: no cold war, at least not against Russia.

General Custer was portrayed as a romantic hero in 40ies/50iesī

He still is portrayed that way, anyone seen Gibson's "We were soldiers"? If anything hollywood has been getting WORSE at its revisionist history. "The Patriot" didn't even bother to use the correct British flag...

The reason why America entered WWII is the Japanese on Pearl Harbour, not their care for Jews

Not only that, but we helped the Germans kill the jews (and other targeted groups). I forget the name of the vessel but in at least one instance before American entrance into WW2, a ship full of Jews trying to escape the holocaust tried to seek refuge in the United States. Our response was to tell them to go fuck themselves and stay away from us.

Major American businesses aided the nazis all the way up to the end of the war. GM & Ford were using neutral countries like Switzerland to supply the Germans with parts to keep their military vehicles from before American entrance operational.

IBM continued to, through their swiss subsidiaries, offer support to the Nazis in the way of punch cards & parts for the Nazi punch card machines. These machines were used to track death camp prisoners, every death camp prisoner had a serial number tattooed onto their forearm. That number matched an IBM punch card that than tracked that prisoner for their entire time in the system; what camps they worked at, when they died, what medical experiments they were used with, age, sex, eye color, hair color, the whole 9 yards. These machines were also used to help track down Jews unaccounted for, and are directly related to the nazi's ability to kill off the Jews they targeted. The Holocaust museum in DC has one of these machines in their lobby, I know I've been there in person.

All these companies were violating US law, technically no less than treason for their support of the Nazis nonetheless our politicians failed to even blink an eye at it (then or since).

* BTW, I should add that there is a reason why the Kaiser tried to get Mexico to fight us during WW1. The Zimmerman telegraph wasn't some impulsive "how can I piss off the Americans today?" move by the Kaiser. Earlier during the war, a bunch of American sailors got in trouble with the local police in Mexico, I forget the exact details but it was a charge serious enough to warrant prison time (had it been Mexican civilians). They were released to our military officials when requested to do so, but Wilson was enraged over the incident and demanded that the Mexican military salute our flag with a cannonade (a major insult). The Mexicans wanted to compromise, for instance saluting both flags at once, but Wilson refused to budge.

American-Mexican relations went so sour that people in Mexico were deathly afraid that we would use American gunboat diplomacy on the country and invade, the way we had with; the Philippines, Cuba, and Brazil all within the last 30 years.

It was in seeing that, that the Kaiser proposed a military alliance against the United States.

Bush will go down as the worst Pres in US history, however we need to stop helping these other ungrateful countries. Fuck Them I hope Obama stops giving aid to all those countries in the world that hate Americans.

Lobbyist are scum.

Prophesying shallow statements like: "Bush will go down as the worst President in US history" doesn't only ignore the verities of the past, but also insults the historical facts that came to be true.

The spot of worst president of the United States, is well reserved for a man who threatened the existence and welfare of the republic itself. That man was Richard Nixon. We all know that the actions of this latter president created a constitutional crisis of unprecedented proportions when all branches of governments stood to fight each other. In retrospect, although Bush has bent the law in numerous cases such as the NSA wiretaps, Gitmo, and the use of waterboarding, he never ignored a ruling by a court when ordered, and he never overstepped his powers when reprimanded by either Congress or the Supreme Court. Something Nixon tried to do, but luckily failed in accomplishing.

The ranking of W. Bush in history will not be known for awhile, and squarely depends on the successes carried in the New Iraq and Afghanistan. The best case scenario would be that Democracy truly succeed in Iraq and sweeps all over the Middle East. Peace is then reached between Israel and Palestine. A new state of Palestine is created, radical Islam and terrorism both collapse to the ash heap of history with no return, and the whole region becomes again a beacon of knowledge, economical prosperity and freedom. Then we can all be assured that Mr. Bush will secure a certain spot as one of the best 10 presidents we ever had. If on the contrary, Iraq fails and deepens into a civil and ethnic war that spills over to the whole region, you can confidently say that Nixon's spot is in jeopardy. For me, I sincerely pray that the first scenario plays out.

Of course, there are worst presidents than Mr. Bush. Some names that come to mind are James Buchanan who hastened the start of the civil war by his incompetence and indecision, John Tyler who supported slavery and whose actions led to the Secession, Herbert Hoover who exacerbated the Great Depression, and finally Warren Harding whose administration was famous for extravagant corruption and limitless scandal.

In the end, it's useful to notice that every US administration was plagued by political scandals, whether it be the Iran Contra, or the Lewinsky gate, scandals come with power. Power always corrupts. It's human nature. Hell it has corrupted Popes before. President-elect Obama has not been sworn in yet, but his administration is already facing its first political challenge: that of Rod R. Blagojevich.

Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to drink some Malbec.

Yeah, America went to their country and fuck shit up, but America is trying to help the Iraqi people. The Iraqis are probably tired of seeing Americans carrying around guns and whatnot, but if America was to leave then Islamic terrorists would just take over Iraq and thus becoming a bigger threat than it was originally.

I just want to clarify one thing. It has been said throughout this post "everybody hates Americans" with the subject being the people of Iraq aka Muslims. Just so you know, we dont hate Americans. Most people dont. You believe this becuase this is what you are told in your media. Every time you see the Middle East, you see a destroyed village, or men waving guns. You see extreme people with extreme beliefs becuase thats what they want you to believe. If they actually showed you real life, doctors and lawyers, and business men, and families in beautiful homes, living normal lives and days just like your own, the American people would be shocked. They would realize, its very much the same, and the people arent that different. Believing the Iraqi people were nothing but nomads and helpless is ignorant. If you see only what is shown on tv, you beleive what they tell you to believe, "The world hates us, but we are the righteous ones". Anyone who has spent time here will tell you its nothing like what is portrayed. We dont hate you. So dont use that as justification for terrible acts. Your media uses fear as its greatest weapon to control the people. All countries and medias do. Proof? How about when it was told on the news Barack Obama attended a MADRASA, ohhhhhhhh scaryyyyyy right? What is that scary Islamic terrorist word??? It means School! Nothing more. School, Grade School, Highschool, Public School, its the same word! But by using the word over and over, the ignorant believe it has some evil meaning which was the intent. The same goes for the images shown of the iraq war.

Again as someone said, we dont know what has happened to this man, who he lost, his wife? his children? If an American Soldier killed your child, even by mistake, how will you react? Shall you say "Well they got Sadam, so its ok". You dont care who this man is, only to seek revenge. He should be thankful that Sadam was removed, is a crazy thing to say. Many countries have tyrants and bad leaders, and in time these countries have REVOLUTIONS. The people will eventually find their way to the type of government they want. Not the one that is forced on them.

Instead just accusing Iraqis or Middle Eastern people of being "Extremists" and of all hating Americans, why dont you think what it must be like to have lived through that.

Imagine your country has some terrible president in the future. He brings in many laws, and unfairly begins holding Americans in prisons, even some disappear or are killed. So perhaps the world decides they will "Help" the American people and invade. They capture the president and convict him of war crimes. But along the way, your wife is killed by a bomb, your son is killed by a soldier by mistake. Now its been over 2 years and your "liberators" are still in your country, with no sign of them ever leaving. While you were happy they came at first, now you have seen them destroy your family. So you gather your guns, car bombs, knives, anything you can, and join the underground fight to get rid of these foreigners, get your revenge. But to the rest of the world you are a "Terrorist". Maybe you will be labeled a "Christian Extremist"

If it makes you feel better to believe everybody hates you, as justification for terrible acts, or that somehow its defending your own freedom to take the war to them, then believe that. After all Im just some extremist somewhere in the middle east, waving guns and living in a shack.

The thrower displayed good mechanics.Someone could work with him to make sure he does connect with the Zionist president to be since he missed the current Israel lover so closely. He throws with the shoe behind his ear and with his feet planted proper as well.Could be a distance relative of the Manning family with such natural skills.
