I never cease to be amazed at how close minded and ignorant people continue to be. Condolences to her family.

I was impressed with the sensitivity and respectful manner in which WSYR-TV in Syracuse used when describing the the victim, "known by friends and family as Latiesha Green. The victim, 22, was a transgendered person."

Which is more than can be said for the Syracuse Post Standard. Their stories on the subject were telling the world that she was "a gay guy being killed for being gay." It took them days to realize the difference between a "gay guy" and a "transsexual" and even then, still disregarded standard journalistic ethics by refusing to use the correct pronouns, names, etc in talking about her.

To date there has still been no correction, and the Post Standard apparently may not have the balls to make a retraction or public apology for their earlier statements. They've had enough people calling, emailing, and stopping by their office to explain their errors, their continuation to disrespect Cannon shows that at this point, the paper maybe intentionally, institutionally, and belligerently continuing the insults towards her and her family.

I woke up to find this article in the Post Standard....

No bail set for suspect in Friday's shooting death

A Syracuse man accused of shooting another man to death because of his sexual orientation was ordered held in jail without bail Monday.

Dwight DeLee, 20, of 420 Gifford St., was arraigned before Syracuse City Judge Langston McKinney on a charge of second-degree murder.

He is accused of intentionally killing Moses "Teish" Cannon by shooting Cannon once in the chest with a .22-caliber rifle as Cannon sat in a car in the 400 block of Seymour Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Police have said Cannon, 22, of 404 Arthur St., apparently was targeted because of his sexual orientation. Cannon often dressed like a woman but was not dressed as a woman Friday night, officials said.

According to paperwork filed in court, the bullet that struck Cannon damaged both lungs and his aorta, causing extensive internal bleeding and resulting in death. Authorities said the bullet first grazed the arm of Cannon's brother, Mark, who was sitting in the car with him.

The murder charge was based on information from a witness who reportedly saw the shooting occur and identified DeLee as the gunman, according to the felony complaint charging DeLee with murder.

Assigned Counsel lawyer Eugene Young told McKinney that DeLee may not qualify to have a free lawyer because he works two jobs, makes more than $600 a week and does not support anyone other than himself.

Young, however, asked the judge to appoint a lawyer to resolve that issue. McKinney appointed lawyer George Hildebrandt and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Friday.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Matthew Doran said the investigation into the shooting is continuing to determine if it should be prosecuted as a hate crime. To do that, the prosecution must show that DeLee intentionally selected the victim - based on a factor such as race, national origin or sexual orientation - or intentionally committed the crime based on such a factor.

Hate-crime prosecution can raise the level of crime in some instances. In the case of a murder prosecution, it would increase the minimum penalty five years to 20 years to life in state prison.

Doran declined to comment on what evidence authorities have to support a hate-crime prosecution.
