Having just had my partner of 17 years die a terrible death from lung cancer (4 months ago and I'm still in tears just about every day over it), and at the same time having several friends who have been HIV+ for many years and still pretty healthy, it is very difficult emotionally for me to see statements of the like that people would rather have lung cancer than be HIV+.

Back in the 1980's, when I lost dozens of friends to AIDS, I can not remember any one which was worse than what happened to my partner, and back then things were infinitely worse for the victims of AIDS. Bad enough that I don't want to think about how many friends purposely OD'd, jumped off of balconies and the like rather than go through the whole range of AIDS dementia, death rattle coughs and all the other end stage events which at that time were inevitable.

Hey slinky, first off you have my deepest sympathy with regard to your loss. My statement was a bad attempt at trying to point out how ridiculous it is to advocate bare-back sex, and how dangerous any activity is that would lead to suffering and then ultimate demise. I have lost family and friends to both maladies over an even longer amount of time, from an my early childhood in fact, and I have survived the passing of my wife as well.

So I share in your feelings, and by no means was implying that any life threatening illness is better than the other. I simply become so incensed at how absurd these threads are by people not recognizing the seriousness and the risk taken from promiscuous behavior.
