I'm going to go out on a limb here and mention "The Blair Witch Project". It was over hyped, but a few scenes were actually scary. The "documentary attempt" was pretty stupid (were those cameras using nuclear power packs, or something?), but it had a certain indie thing going for it. The scene when they hear the weird noises at night, off in the distance, is probably the creepiest. The ending isn't bad either.

Yes, she shouldn't have gone into the basement, but where else was she going to go?

The Original Halloween by John Carpenter

Great choice. Halloween III is also good. Because it doesn't have the supernatural, sadistic and silly stalker Micheal Myers trudging around all over the place -- :)
It's directed by Tommy Lee Wallace. Who also directed the fairly decent horror miniseries, IT. Based on Stephen King's superb novel.

I like Halloween 3 as well but you are telling me that a secret coven of witches stealing a rock from Stonehenge in order to make Halloween masks that kill children when a commercial is played isnt supernatural or silly?

Also, I dont really have a favorite, I will just give you five favorites in no order.

The Exorcist

Dawn of the Dead (original)
Rosemary's Baby
Evil Dead II

This is one of the three horror movies ( Exorcist, dawn of the dead,
Gates of Hell) that have totally freaked me out when i was a young kid.
Never could sleep for next two-three days.
The Exorcist still to this very day creeps me out and i cannot watch it
at night.
It's still by far the best and easily scariest horror movie of all time, to me.

the girl who had her entire stomach come out of her mouth
in the movie drive-in was creepy as hell, too!
i thought the very ending was stupid but the movie as a whole was
so chilling.

Arachrinidphobia (sp) was creepy too. i'm always looking around my
coffy table and sopha when i'm watching that creepy crawling movie.
Same for William Shafner's " KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS. "

The Sorcerers (1967) Boris Karloff, Catherine Lacey.

http://www.xxxphotosharing.com/images/7o7n0mvo1w55p4oxfbw.jpg

London in the swinging sixties, mini skirts, vox amplifiers, mark 10 jags, wimpy bars, mohair suits, ... Enter Prof. Marcus Monserrat, deadbeat scientist shunned by his peers. Enter Nicole his partner the ultimate Lady Macbeth bitch. These two octogenarians carry out psychedelic mindbending experiments on london pretty boys, ... brainwashing, sex by proxy, and murder. Nicole is madder than a bucketload of snakes, whilst Prof. Marcus is helpless to cutail her vicarious thrill seeking orgasms. A british classic and Catherine Lacey really is the star in this movie!

OKay so some of the stuff of animals is real, but even the famous monkey scene is staged. Other than the stock news footage, none of the goofy stuff like the guy falling off the building or the hostage situation is real.

Faces of Death is so weak in comparison to "Banned in America ",
series which in my opinion is the most graphic, visual disturbing live
documentary that one will ever see. All graphic scenes have been
captured on film, before it was edited by the news stations to present
to the public viewer.
in fact, there is yet another graphic series named " Banned from
Television " series which is another live documentary series
that is far ahead of Faces of Death series. BFT is extremely graphic
but a notch under Banned from America.

Beneath the Sands of Iraq is also very graphic. and could be
slightly above or a tie with Faces of Death.
Faces of Death featured one scene of note with a convict being
electrocuted by death penalty but isn't near as fully loaded with graphic
scenes as Banned in America or Banned from Television.
gun-shot suicides, crushed head burgular attempts, dismemberment
car accidents, drug-overdose, assassinations, beheaded drug cartels,
live sniper head shot on a hostage taker, even a man whose testicles
as big as medicine balls.
Be Warned, you really have to have a strong stomach to watch
Banned from America.

TV episodes that scared the hell out me as a kid:

Episode of Little House On The Prarie when, while spying through a window, the girls apparently see Mr. Olsen chopping off Mrs. Olsens head with a schythe.

Epsiode of The Waltons when one of the kids is haunted by a poltegeist, at night her Raggedy Anne doll moves around on top of her dresser, among other freaky scenes.

Yes, decapitation and moving dolls on quality family television. Now that was scary.

Define 'Horror'?
My own interpretation would be something that has moved you in a way that you feel shouldn't be pleasurable but curiously/guiltily IS. I think there is a certain pleasure in the thought 'Thank God, that is Not happening to me'.
Unfortunately, I am often unsatisfyingly underwhelmed by the majority of 'horror' films
Using my own definition as a yardstick, films that have left me genuinely uncomfortable or spooked are:

The Exorcist (no contest)
Rosemary's Baby
Don't Look Now
The Wicker Man (original version)
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Shining

With a notable mention going to one that terrified me when I was a wee man.

Night of the Demon

Well you might be thinking of R Budd Dwyer which is actually featured in Traces of Death and is very real. Traces of death used mostly news footage of actual events and deaths as apposed to Faces, which used some news footage and scenes of animals also had a lot of staged stuff as well.

I think all those classic movies are great horror films that were previously mentioned. I'm not going to re-list those but add a few other more recent films that are VERY worth your time. I'm a horror junkie so Im biased but everyone I've showed these movies to, have agreed that they are great.

1. Inside
2. High Tension ( I fell in luv with the song 'New Born' by Muse on account of this movie + a girl gets Skull Fucked and that's always awesome)
3. Feast & Feast 2
4. Dead Set (2008 UK zombie mini-series)
5. House of a 1000 Corpses
6. Devil's Rejects
7. Halloween (RZ remake)

good list.

how was feast 2?

have you seen splinter?

i haven't seen house of 1000 corpses and really liked devil's rejects but i thought the remake of halloween was just awful and i thought the unrated version was even worse than the theatrical one.

Not a big fan of horror movies here. A long time ago (maybe in 1989 or 1990), I saw this movie called Curse II: The Bite. Although it was a pretty stupid movie with a ridiculous plot, it scared the shit outta me. Well, I was still a kid. Just a few months ago, some nostalgia feeling caught me, so I decided to buy the DVD and it took me a long time to find it because I couldn´t remember the movie title. Once again, the movie sucked but it was fun, so if you´re into crappy horror garbage, check it out:

Let The Right One In - really blew me away. I used to be really into horror movies but now I think they're crap compared to Let The Right One In. Except some based on Stephen King books like The Shining and It.

An American werewolf in London is a great one! i should have included that on my list. Creedy as hell in its time !...the jump scenes and werewolf-special effects were awesome and off the chain, before the Howling and Dog Soldiers came along.

Who has a favourite horror film!! was the first thought that popped into my head! I am the ultimate chicken!

Films that made me go bump in the night!!! (At the time and in no order)
The Descent
The Shining - Those twins!
Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street 1!
The house with a thousand corpses was a good one, was it scary or was it just me!?

Seriously I hate films that make my heart beat to quickly! I put my fingers over my eyes and my toes in my ears! :-/
