But remember, they still had the same surgical amenities and hormones they have now (for transwomen sakes) what era would you choose! And the same open mindedness about race etc

I would choose the late 50s earl 60s when the doo wop music was still huge!

Woman still cared what they looked like when they went out and to clubs.

And it would be a fun era to live in besides the whole Martin Luther King Era

Oh,thats a simple question to answer....
mid 80's! partying @ 84 King Street @ the PG listening to LL playing Janice McClain's Smack dab in the middle, while getting a drink from Chi Chi :P and watching the queen of disco (who sadly died of complications from AIDS  ) perform later in the eve....

Wheres the time capsule?

There's no time like the present, but if I had to choose I would go with the mid to late 19th century. I'd move out west and live the simple life.

what's the fun of living in the 50's if you can't treat black people like shit?

i prefer the present, where at least on the internet it's acceptable to be a racist

It's true certain films bring back the decadent NYC 80's with fondness. "American Psycho", is one of my personal faves. Christian Bale plays Brett Easton Ellis's Patrick Bateman to a tee. And makes mindless partying and murder seem fun.

For me it would have to be the 1920's . The Flapper era.. that era Very Louise Brooks ,,for me that era had so much style, grace and a certain taboo, not to mention a certain erotisim . It was the era where women flaunted their sex, and didn't care, they where in a way free to do what they chose and didnt care what society thought, they drank mingled, wore fabulous garmets, smoked up a storm, and were in comand of their sexual endevors ...no mater what!

I think just found my halloween costume!!!!!!!!!!!!

1920s to the 1940s, Like the style of the era, and as long as you were really rich the great depression wasn't that big of a deal.

Mid/late 1800's, either American Old West or Sherlock Holmes era London. This would depend on my occupation at that time, though. If I was stuck mining coal back then, I'd just as soon stay where I'm at.

1977. I don't know why, but whenever someone asks me a question like this, I alway choose this year. I was only a year old at the time.

Have to stick closer to today...

I love the style and music of the 1920's to 40's and I think the sixties had some very good parties (folks still dressed up for parties back then) but to much of the social climate was scary.

And I like the amenities of today too much... climate control and cable tv... cars I don't have to work on every weekend to keep running. Microwave food when I'm home alone and don't want to cook.

if medical technology and race and cultural relations were the same as they are today i would like to have been born in either 1850 or 1950. the only problem would be that under the rules of the question most of the historical things that i would want to experiance would never happen. no republican party/GOP,no civil war or woodstock!! the world would be so different.Music and movies would all change because those types of issues are what formed this current nation.

Medieval times anywhere between 1066-1485, come on it was a time when noble men prove themselves by sword fights and knights were looked upon as brave warriors.Kings and queens ruled the land with a ironfist.

Actually the old west WAS during the Victorian age ;)

I'd have to vote for the same era... because it would also mean later living threw such a rapid change in, well, everything. Invention of radio, cars, tv- so much in a single lifetime. Not even the babyboomers have seen such a drastic change in environment.

But realistically, I would be much better off today. With all my health probs I would have been one of those stats about infant mortality and then missed out on everything.

Most of them revolve around British youth cultural movements.

Early to mid 90s Britain in the midst of the Cool Britannia movement. I would love to have been there at the first showings of Damien Hirst's work or to live in Camden during the early days when all those great bands were forming.

That or late 70s early 80s London for the punk scene, the fashion, the music, the anger would have been astounding to see up close. That said they were very depressed times, in terms of high rates of youth unemployment and economic and social policies under Tory government.

I wouldn't mind being a 1960s mod either. Take some 'ludes, throw my bomber on over my suit and head to Brighton on my tricked out Vespa to kick the piss out of some dirty rockers.

I agree with braveman though, I'd like this to be a temoprary visit, not a permanent one. I like my life in the here and now. It would be fun to do ethnographic research in 'the then'.

But my guess is you will now try to clean up what you said so you don't appear to be racist. If you said you also had a problem with the JFK era, then I could see where you're going with this. But to single King out, kinda suspect on your part.

That's the greatest idea ever! Even looking now at pictures of Louise Brooks you can see how she just eminated class and sexuality all at the same time.

I'd love to see a picture if you go through with it :)

Also a damn good call! I'd be torn between 16th century (pirating it up right along side), and the early '70s. Although, I'd have to say the '70s would probably do it for me. I'm a music junkie who's always though he was born in the wrong era. I'd love to go back and see my favorite period of rock, between '67 and '73.[/img]

Mid - 80s to mid-90s. Great time for alterntative music. Also...my profession wasn't as complex as it is today. But hey...if I was Dr. Who I could go anywhere. :D

1967-ish, West Coast, just in time to jump on Ken Kesey's bus and be a part of the Merry Pranksters. Then jumping off the bus on the East coast in time for Woodstock. And if there were TS's dancing around at Woodstock... all the better.

In a completely weird u-turn, my second choice would be 1941. Ultimately I allow for the fact that I could be killed by a Kraut or Kamakaze, but if I'd survived, it would be a great tale to tell. And back in the 40's, chicks digged soldiers.

I've always wanted to live life in Edo-period Japan.

The drawback of this, naturally, is that if I had been born back then, I'd be dead today.

I don't think I would choose the age of piracy. A cruise of the Caribbean, that might be OK in the modern era, I suppose, but I still have some problems with that scenario.
