Sad and tragedy - some words from David Gilmour:

No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend.

In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten.

He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.

I have never played with anyone quite like him. The blend of his and my voices and our musical telepathy reached their first major flowering in 1971 on 'Echoes'. In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones where he is in full flow. After all, without 'Us and Them' and 'The Great Gig In The Sky', both of which he wrote, what would 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' have been? Without his quiet touch the Album 'Wish You Were Here' would not quite have worked.

In our middle years, for many reasons he lost his way for a while, but in the early Nineties, with 'The Division Bell', his vitality, spark and humour returned to him and then the audience reaction to his appearances on my tour in 2006 was hugely uplifting and it's a mark of his modesty that those standing ovations came as a huge surprise to him, (though not to the rest of us).

Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously.

Over here in the UK ,on the national radio station I listen to,Radio 2,the most popular BBC station,Johnny Walker started the breakfast programme at 7-30 without a word.He just played"The Great Gig In The Sky".
I had to pull over into a supermarket carpark and listen and have a little weep at the loss of such a nice man, first and foremost and an extraordinary musician who has meant such a lot to me and whose music I have loved and cherished for over 37 years.
Rest in peace Richard.

I'm really upset by this, the loss of a great man. I'm playing all my Pink Floyd albums today as a mark of respect for this great man.

Rick was a textural keyboard god. In many ways he made Pink Floyd for me. RIP, a sad day indeed.

Read about it just a few minutes age...what a bummer! Floyd is most definitely in my top TWO.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow musicians. A very great loss.

R.I.P.

Floyd was my fave band as I was growing up. They were with me throughout a lot of twists and turns in life and it is sad to see such a great musician go.

Totally devastating......the only guy who stood up to Roger Waters in that band (although I love Waters as much, even though he's kind of a prick). The unsung hero of PF. I'm busting out my "Live at Pompeii" just for him........Sad.

It's been two days now, and he's apparently still dead, so I suppose a Youtube tribute is in order. Personally, I never gave much thought to Richard Wright. Pink Floyd was one of the few bands to use a keyboard effectively, but it's still a pretty lame instrument. Keyboard players are the guys who score the groupies the drummer doesn't want.

That being said, for what it's worth, he was still damn good at what he did.

RIP Rick.

Waters was the true talent in that band, Gilmour 2nd. Quite the existential band, and Id say maybe as psychedelic as the Doors. "hey you" , ever figure out he's talking to himself? the creative impulse trapped by the outside persona, awesome shit
