Finally a good thread by HTG

Not my fav songs or music but the best videos I´ve ever seen:

Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (long version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1LYidBlBow

Depeche Mode - Halo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBSVZwCABNc

Depeche Mode - Behind The Wheel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ16M3-nrkg

Alice in Chains - Rooster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpH5i3xD7tA

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ-CKRi_tlw

Most of the Depeche Mode videos were directed by Anton Corbijn who is in my opinion the best music video director ever. Just to make clear why there´re 3 DM vids in my list. :)

If we're talking about the actual video, and not the song itself... My vote would go to anything that doesn't feature the band fluffing their egos. Or anything directed by Chris Cunningham.

This one is my all-time favorite. It's slow, quiet, and boring. Like me.

Roads is indeed a Portishead song, and I love their version also. The cover is by My Dying Bride... I picked it because I like the video, and just for something a little different since I don't think a lot of people have heard this version.

I think the visuals were done by Tim Burton, but I'm not sure if he made it specifically for the song or if it was for another project... either way, I like it a lot.

That was actually really cool... I love the director's style. It reminds me of SOAD's video for Spiders, in a way.

Those videos practically bleed artistic integrity.

When Sledgehammer came out in 1986 it was probably one of the best music videos made up to that point. The rest are trash, but they were great to watch.

Live performance:
1. Eric Clapton backed by Yvonne Eliman - Tearing Us Apart, live from Hyde Park '96, Awesome blues guitar w/horns section.

Regular Videos:
1. The Romantics - One in a Million - great pop tune
2. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer - a true work of art
3. Billy Joel - Pressure - again art as pop
4. Night Comes falling from the Sky - Bob Dylan. Shot in black and white. Who is that playing guitar with Dylan? Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics.

Honorable Mention
The Who w/Elton John - Pinball Wizard
Eurythmics - Would I Lie to You?

I've worked out some more ones

Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK7Ai9dWrRQ
Burn Bridges - The Grates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbxa6j-WXMs (I have such a huge crush on the singer of the Grates)

The reason I like these is the use of colour. I find a lot of music vids are all moody and dark with really subdued visuals these ones use much wider palettes that I think really strike you.

Honourable mention to all other Grates vids, this one is the newest single so I figured it deserves more attention.

Oh yes. More to add:

Concert clip:

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac. The song is still painful when you see Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks look at each other the whole song.

Give Blood - Pete Townshend. You know the unbelieveable guitar piece in the beginning of the song? It is performed by none other than Dave Gilmour, he of Pink Floyd fame.

Honorable mention:
Tom Petty - Rebels

Music Vids:
Gold Dust Woman - Hole - remake for the Crow. Dark and disturbing

Self Esteem - the Offspring - see above

Trapped in a Box - No Doubt. One of their first and still the best.

Songs that should have videos or concert clips:

Higher Ground - Eric Clapton cover
Sinnerman - Nina Simone - one of the darkest songs ever.

bklynboy,

I was at the Pete Townshend & Dave Gilmour concert at the Brixton Academy in London. I was right in front of Gilmour, front row, with his speakers right at my left ear. And yes, I was deafened by them, & could only hear a buzzing for hours afterwards. Great concert though. Simon Phillips on drums too.

Here's a clip of the song, enjoy ..
