I've only listened few bands

From new wave genre Joe Jackson who has also done many other genres.
here's one of his lyrics which are relevant to tgirls or gay men.
http://mondaypapers.com/beatcrazy/fit.html

Little rock genre (Peter Murphy)
Little industrial (Front Line Assembly)
Some goth or electronic (Deine Lakaien, Wolfsheim)
Atmospheric rock/metal (The Gathering)

Here's also some band names I used to listen quite alot Queen, The Cure, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy, Led Zeppelin.

BTW. Do any of you know the video of The Knife - Pass this on. It's really interesting video with a trans singer. Sadly the video is no longer available in their site but I could post it here.

Actually, I believe it features Rickard Engfors, who's a drag entertainer and swimwear model. Definitely a man, but one who looks amazing as a woman.

I found version of the clip once and downloaded it but it doesn't seem to work. So I've never seen it. Have you got it on electronic file?

Now that's a diverse assortment, Arianna. I actually like Bow Wow Wow--the hoopla over the then-14-year-old (or something like that) lead singer--what's her name?--posing naked (but revealing nothing) on the album cover was quite something.

I love jazz--I missed the entire punk/new wave period from 1975-82 or so because I was primarily listening to jazz then. Speaking of jazz musicians, right at the moment I'm listening to an incredible new cd, a rare and accidental find of the 1957 Thelonious Monk/John Coltrane sessions, "thelonious monk quartet with john coltrane at carnegie hall." Recorded almost 48 years ago (November 29, 1957), the Blue Note cd features both the early show and the late show:

Early Show: Monk's Mood, Evidence, Crepuscule with nellie, nutty, epistrophy
Late Show: bye-ya, sweet and lovely, blue monk, epistrophy (incomplete)

Thelonious Monk, piano (in excellent form)
John Coltrane, tenor sax (superb as always)
ahmed abdul-malik, bass
Shadow wilson, drums

As the liner notes indicate, 1957 was the year of emergence for Coltrane; one section of the notes is called "the high priest and the budding innovator" which sums it up. Although at the time jazz was fading from popularity (becoming increasingly difficult for "the man in the street" to listen to and enjoy, as bemoaned here on the list many a time) and rock and roll was on the ascendent, the 50s were a fecund period for jazz, and my favorite era overall. The roots were laid in the 40s with be-bop and invention reached a crazed peak (and often lost itself, to my ear) in the 60s, but between Monk, Trane, Cannonball, Garner, MJQ, and so many others, the 50s produced some amazing jazz, and this cd is a welcome addition to the ranks.

My other big jazz discovery over the past year or so is Patricia Barber, a phenomenal pianist and vocalist and an inimitable, highly intelligent songwriter. Highly recommended.

Other recent acquisitions in heavy rotation:

The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Neil Young - Prairie Wind
Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself
Aine Minogue - The Twilight Realm (Irish harpist living in Boston, not related to Kylie or Danni, lol)
Eric Andersen - Beat Avenue
Over the Rhine - Drunkard's Prayer and Films for Radio
Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic vol. 1
Fionna Apple - Extraordinary Machine
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - Reckless Burning
Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering.

That's enough for now!

They were another Malcolm (Sex Pistols) McLaren act-- Malkie always knew that shock is a big seller. There's a very interesting parallel, though; in 1971 or thereabouts Blind Faith released their self-titled album which was a MASSIVE international hit. (Blind Faith were EC, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Rick Gretch, btw.) Anyway the cover featured a topless picture of a very obviously teenage girl. She was actually 14, I believe. That album, now a CD, is still on sale with that cover and no one ever batted an eyelid. Funny how times changed in little over a decade.

Here's a link

I see they've gone a bit coy with the overprint on the "deluxe" edition, but the standard one (with the uncensored cover) is still around.

Well, that's true in the UK, but in the US when Blind Faith was released, the cover was changed to a black and white photo of the band. It was years--maybe decades--before the album was available in the US with the original cover, and then it drew attacks and I think was withdrawn afterwards (but I'm not sure of that last part).

Well, that's too simplistic as well, though I see your point. They are two different things, with rap being a component of hip hop. Davey D (cited on http://www.rapnewsdirect.com/News/2004/07/03/HH.Rap.Defined/) even defines hip hop as a noun and rap as a verb to mark the distinction:

Hip-hop versus rap

Are they terms for the same thing? No, says Davey D, nationally renowned hip-hop historian. He acknowledges that some people think rap is a more frivolous form of hip-hop, but thinks ''that's a false definition. One is part of a whole. Rap is part of a larger entity we call hip-hop, which is a culture.''

Hip-hop n., an American cultural movement composed of four main parts: breakdancing and graffiti art along with two more well-known aspects known as hip-hop music; they are rapping (emceeing) and DJ-ing.

Rap v., the act of saying rhymes to the actual beat of the music.

So hip hop is more than the music, it's the culture (as you say), and rap is actually "less" than (or distinct from) the music, as it's rhyming to the beat of the music. Rap is a spoken form, hip hop a culture. While the hip hop culture has come to own rap and make it their own, its roots go back far before the emergence of hip hop, to the beatnik poets of the 50s and Bob Dylan's seminal song, "Subterranean Homesick Blues." Debbie Harry raps on the song "Rapture," but I don't think anyone would seriously contend that the song is hip hop.

Manheim Steamroller/Chip Davis
Clam Chowder (A local Maryland folk group)
Jean Michele Jarre
Synergy
Thomas Newman (Film composer, American Beauty, Pay It Forward, A Series of Unfortunate Events, theme to Six Feet Under)
"Snuffy" Walden (TV composer, Early Edition, West Wing)
Aaron Copeland
Two Nice Girls (I Spent My Last Ten Bucks On Birth Control and Beer is my all time favorite of theirs)

How's that for variety? :D

My desire wasn't to start a discussion on the difference of Rap and Hip Hop. You just expounded my point.

My absolute favs is Metal (Death, Black, Thrash, etc) like Possessed, Venom, Slayer, Destruction, Tankard, Sodom, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, etc.. and THE OLD Metallica (when they actually deserved to be called "Metallica").
I also love old school Punk: Sex Pistols, The Exploited, GBH, X-Ray Spex and all those real punk bands (no!, Green Day is not a punk band!!).
Also very few alternative bands, some old New Wave and some dance/trance music ;)

If I have to choose my top 5 favorite bands they would be:
1.- AC/DC (Best band in the World).
2.- SLAYER
3.- BLACK SABBATH (With Ozzy)
4.- DYING FETUS
5.- THE EXPLOITED

I couldn't possibley make a complete list of what I listen to, because I like alot of stuff. But I will say that, today in the car, I was listening to Bow Wow Wow, Ultramagnetic MC's, Imani Coppola, Leonard Cohen, and Dionne Warwick. But that's like the tip of the iceberg. Overall, the musicians that I respect the most are jazz musicians.

I actually am a huge fan of jazz,, the older the better.. also i love, world music i also love,, underground , non- commercialized music,

Our music tastes are very similiar.

I love jazz, particularly the standards and a anything with a pianist. I love
Brazilian jazz,

Old school and neo-soul are also faves for me.

I've also got to have my Gospel fix at least once a day.

And Janira, I'm still looking for my Maria Bethania on vinyl.
