I don't have a sexiest Olympian but I did see a most beautiful thing in the Womens team Gymnastics final.

Real teamwork and team spirt that felt just so wholesome and pure.

The Americans were handicapped by how much more difficulty points were awarded to the Chinese. If the Chinese messed up and the USA had really strong exercises they could win gold. Neither of those things happened. This one name Alicia Sacremone, the teams captain, choked twice. She fell off of the balance beam and she fell flat on her ass on the floor exercise as well as going out of bounds. She never shed a tear she was just stunned with how bad things went for her.

They won silver.

Then it happened in an interview after everything had wrapped up with the whole team. Shawn Johnson, from Iowa really put it all in perspective and said the most heartfelt things. She spoke of how their fortune could not be blamed on any one person, everyone has those days, they believe that they are the greatest team in the world.* It makes me cry to think of it and it finally made Sacremone cry and let it out upon hearing that. That was really beautiful.

Even more so when I compare that kind of pulling together to the behavior of most of my sisters. In that kind of a situation TS/TG women would try to hamstring each other with dramas and recriminations.

* That may not have been just a reference to teamwork or denial of reality. Their is a rule that says that all competitors must at least turn 16 in the olympic year. At least two of the Chinese Gymnast was clearly younger than that. I was looking at this one girl like "Why did they let that 7 year old girl compete?" Bela Karoyli (he coached Nadia Comanich, and Mary Lou Retton among other legnds and Icons of Gymnastics) said "The Chineese have the advantage of having 13 and 14 year old kids who do not realize the pressure and stakes and so they just go out and attack the apparattus....it's just fun to them."

Anyway all intrigue aside that was a really beautiful thing that happened there.

I have no idea why out of all the millions of bits of information in the human genome we seem so hung up on the ones relating to skin pigmentation. If you look at the girl you can see elements of all her various background components are evident. I'm sick of hearing Canadians going on about this. I used to respect Canada, but the poor sportsmanship being shown is just incredible! Both calls were valid. The six second rule is a valid rule (FIFA Rule 12), and it gets called more often than you think. It also helps to have a USA player standing near the ref actively counting off the seconds to force the ref to call it. No notification is required to issue any penalty resulting in an indirect free-kick. None! The fact that your GK was warned about it potentially being called at half time was a courtesy on the part of the ref. Players as well as coaches are expected to know the rule of the game. No warning is ever given when a slide tackle at the start of the game results in an indirect free kick, the same is true of this! Even a yellow card being issued does not require advance notice. But in most cases, a yellow being issued, comes after a player has been warned. But it's certainly not required. Again, players are expected to know the rules.

Complain all you want about it, there is a long history of this sort of thing in sports. How many times in hockey have you seen a team complain about the curvature of a blade on a hockey stick? It happens all the time. Players are expected to know that rule too. Want to get a baseball player ejected? Complain about the pine tar on his bat, or that it doesn't meet the length requirements, etc. Want a soccer player off the pitch, point out that his sports shorts are white and don't match the rest of the uniform. Uniform violation, he's off the pitch until it's resolved giving you a man advantage. Players are expected to know the rules, and these little technicalities are a part of the game that experienced players use to get an advantage. That's why a 3 olypics vet like Abby Wambach can essentially force a ref to call the six second rule.

You don't see a lot of Americans bitching about the Canadian coach going to the refs before the game and warning them to be on the lookout for these "illegal tactics" your coach complained of, but were never called. It's part of the game, if we played unfairly, call it.

As for the hand-ball, it went off not 1, but 2 arms, and the first player turned her body toward the ball and moved her arm up to block the ball. She was at a distance and position where the ball was expected to make contact with her. That's contact that will get called every time and in every league. (Again, FIFA Rule 12, and the rule interpretations) The second player, that was incidental contact that would not have resulted in a call. But she wasn't the one it was called on. Again, a valid call.

Now, how about Tancredi stomping on a US player's head and NOT getting the red-card for that? I don't hear any Canadians saying she should have gotten sent off for that. That was a gift to Canada from the refs. How about Tancredi's 7 fouls, and Sinclair's 6. How about the Canadian players holding jerseys in the penalty box so hard that the US players were falling to the ground? One of which should have given the US a penalty kick. No? Nothing from Canada on those calls that went missed as a gift to your country? I thought so.

Its 'laws of the game' and its a directive. If the player had been already warned, there can be no excuse. Few refs at the top level of the game enforce this rule to be honest. I'm surprised it was given, even though technically correct.

If the player is putting their arms away from their body and it stops the ball or alters its direction, then ts deliberate handball.

There is no law stating a foot on the head is a straight red, it will be deemed by the ref if the player is committing dangerous or foul play. If a player is lying on the ground, then its likely the head may get stamped on.

Anyway, the USA were the better team throughout the tournament and the final was brilliant, but they were better than Japan. I saw Canada v Team GB in the Quarter final and as good as Canada were, they were there for the taking. And I'd like to see Hope Solo and Alex Morgan fuck each other.. hmm.

Uniform violation, he's off the pitch until it's resolved giving you a man advantage. Players are expected to know the rules, and these little technicalities are a part of the game that experienced players use to get an advantage. That's why a 3 olypics vet like Abby Wambach can essentially force a ref to call the six second rule.

You don't see a lot of Americans bitching about the Canadian coach going to the refs before the game and warning them to be on the lookout for these "illegal tactics" your coach complained of, but were never called. It's part of the game, if we played unfairly, call it.

As for the hand-ball, it went off not 1, but 2 arms, and the first player turned her body toward the ball and moved her arm up to block the ball. She was at a distance and position where the ball was expected to make contact with her. That's contact that will get called every time and in every league. (Again, FIFA Rule 12, and the rule interpretations) The second player, that was incidental contact that would not have resulted in a call. But she wasn't the one it was called on. Again, a valid call.

Now, how about Tancredi stomping on a US player's head and NOT getting the red-card for that? I don't hear any Canadians saying she should have gotten sent off for that. That was a gift to Canada from the refs. How about Tancredi's 7 fouls, and Sinclair's 6. How about the Canadian players holding jerseys in the penalty box so hard that the US players were falling to the ground? One of which should have given the US a penalty kick. No? Nothing from Canada on those calls that went missed as a gift to your country? I thought so.
