Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' new reality show is documenting his search for a new assistant and the rapper and entrepreneur has cast a transsexual as one of the contestants for the position.

On the new show, which premieres on VH1 next week, gorgeous transsexual Laverne Cox competes with other contestants to become P. Diddy's new assistant.

A hot gay guy has also been cast for the show. His name is Rob Smith and is a New Yorker and an Iraq war veteran.

Lets hope Cox - the first black transsexual to be cast on a reality show - gets her fair chance to win the competition and that Diddy didn't just bring her on to get publicity to the show.

I like Laverne, but I'm not sure she's enough of the cutthroat type who seem to do well on these shows. She's too nice.

....but I'd treat her better.
I have no way of provin it, but I'd bet a Philly blunt Diddy tried 2 hit.

It is a PR stunt, but the more positive exposure for the trans community, the better, I say...

how exactly does a reality show qualify as positive exposure?

Just hopeful thinking that she'll come off as being professional, and above all, human, to the rest of the world.

Come on people don't u know that Diddy used to have TS at his parties back in the early 90's? Some old timers must remember when he used to date them b4 he was known. 2 TS girls were even cast in 2 B.I.G. videos.

how exactly does a reality show qualify as positive exposure?

its another step towards being accepted in the mainstream media. With anyluck therell be fanfare and people will realize that tgirls have been sidelined and looked down upon for no real reason, and they should be allowed and encouraged to pursue their happiness, just like everyone else. The change starts within yourself, and the example you give shows others how to act.
If Puff can hang out with a cute tgirl and hes not threatened by it and everything is cool, it will change minds, and quicker. People believe what they see.
Like Silence of the Lambs, people had to be escorted in fear to their cars, after Jaws the beaches were empty, after the Exorcist people chucked the ouija boards...

So if we can have a tgirl as a popular contestant..it can only help.

p.diddy's sexuality always was questioned!
his right hand man bentley was always look at!
i'm not at all surprised that a T.S would b a participant on the new show
hope she wins

reality tv is a freakshow not mainstream media... granted some of it manages to reach the level of not completely daft but its still a freakshow

I was sitting at home with some of my friends, male and female. When the TS on diddy's upcoming show flashed across the screen, it was met with a lot of jokes and harsh criticism. Yes, the reaction was ignorant...but the reaction was real. I just sat there and observed.

I agree with the quote. A positive step would be a news anchor, a prominent role on a respected TV show, and so on....not as a side show on a reality TV show thats going to make the contestants look like assholes begging for 15 minutes of fame. Thats like having a TS on flavor of love just to be objectified like the rest of the women. I think with open minds that it could be looked at with positive views, but the public is going to see it as a side show. If this goes wrong, it could set back public reaction to TS even more. Just like how Flavor of Love set black folks back about 50 years. Reality TV is not good.

Some people are missing the point here.

Wether you like reality tv or not-it's groundbreaking and very important that this has happened.

America is not like some other countries where TS women have made strides in TV-Spain, France, UK-just to name a few.

People don't understand that the 'establishment' is willing to give us so little-especially media focus. So it's essential that we as transwomen given these oppurtunities, take them and exploit them for everything they are worth-because they are indeed ground breaking. The mere fact that a ts was chosen for this show is amazing.

It does not matter what you think of Puff Daddy or the subject matter.
Those who are being critical are overlooking the bigger picture here.

Anytime we are recognized well and put forth in the media, everyone should be proud, that NO matter what negative opinions might be (and there will always be PLENTY) it's most important to recognize that we are making strides towards trans people becoming more mainstream.

its can be great, but thats if its not like a lot of shows VH1 is producing now.

If Diddy is being himself, its a good sign, but if VH1 is pulling the strings, its gonna be ugly.

I'm trying to figure out what P Diddy needs an assistant for. What does he do, besides being wealthy for some reason?

Still, the show will probably be a positive thing.

Funny thing, I had a post in this thread deleted. Why? Is my critical analysis of entertainment too negative? It happens to be the truth. I can say that anywhere else online and folks will agree with me, but because it involves a trannie, it gets deleted here. Someone here has major issues. And all this time I thought dude was cool. Go figure.

I've finished watching the show an hour or so ago.

I've also seen an interview with Diddy on Youtube about the show, and
with some comments about her.

In his video by him, and on tonights' show by a few cast members she is
referred to as a transvestite.

In a seperate segment when she is explaining to the rest of her cast
mates what transgendered means, she says that 'drag queens, cross
dressers, transsexuals are all trangendered, which is technically true.

I would have hoped that as the sole transwoman on the show, and as a
woman who has a BFA , and works as an activist, she would do a good
job at explaining to lay-people what transsexualism means.

I don't expect her to get on a soap box about all things trans, but I would
have hoped that she would dispel a number of misconceptions.

Hi Ms.Peggyhttp://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/103.gif

On a couple of forums that I am on, we all felt a collective slap in the
face.

Diddy called her a transvestite in his vblog, her cast mates called her
one, and I have seen her called that on other boards.

Someone needs to educate society at large on the difference
between a transvestite and a transsexual.

I feel a lengthy Peggy Gee diatribe coming on, y'all should warn them
that they don't want that.

Last but far from least, how are you feeling? I hope that you are
recupperating well. Have you picked your classes for Fall yet?
