Ok so I have this compaq desktop pc which is about 2-3 years old. One night we had a power trip in the building and now when I turn it on the green light flashes (as opposed to being stationary). So I had it looked at by a pc tech today. I brought the pc to his shop and when he hooked it up and everything alas! It turned on, loaded and went directly to xp welcome screen (with username prompt).

So I went home with it and when I turned it on at my place the same thing happens..the green light was flashing and nothing came on my screen. WTF? Does anyone know what the real problem is? I must have tried every outlet inside the apt. and still the same.

Thanks in advance.

It might be your monitor.

check your monitor plus get yourself a good surge protector.

flashing light usually means communication issues. try connecting your laptop to the monitor and see if you have the same problem when using the monitor for your laptop display...

Sounds like your power supply.

Remove the battery and reinstall. And or check the power cord where it plugs into the pc, a lot of times they fail from being twisted so many times. Look on the bottom of the pc for a reset button, looks like a little hole that you can stick a paperclip end in. Good luck...

PS units in home computers are generally underpowered, Dell in particular used to throw in 305w PSUs as stock, for example. Some stock computers might have a 350w PSU in them, but either way its not good enough if you are using any kind of graphically intense program or game. Most video cards these days require at least 500w to get the juice they need.
I built my own and put in an 850w PSU and it could probably power a city block. If you can install RAM you can essentially build your own comp, next time you're ready for a new one, do it yourself and you can build a badass computer than can handle all the latest shit perfectly for around $1,100.

To prevent any "unforseen" issues with h/w or s/w for that matter I find that using linux (ubuntu more specifcally) the best recourse. Any and every issue can be solved by geeks online
