Okay, so we're clear on what "kiki" is, right?

Who knows this one? In the TS vernacular, what is the etymology of the term, "boo"? Where did that come from?

Just curious. :)

So in the past when a girl has referred to me as "Boo", it was an endearing compliment?

... I was sure it meant something else. :)

I've never heard of someone using "boo" for referring to a guy, but I am usually not very good with slang.

So about 4 years ago I'm out with a bunch of guys, one of who is somewhat of a Wigga - not in all life, but when he goes out he always hits on "The Sistahs", thinks he's go his rap down, plays James Brown, etc. in his car, and other assorted schtick. Anyway, we decide to go to a strip club and for some reason we pick Pumps in Brooklyn (this was back when it was basically a converted diner car.

So you've go half a dozen white businessmen walking into a mostly black/spanish stripclub and as we're walking by the narrow bar we hear "Hey, there's my boo!!!!!!" and one of the girl comes running over to me. I hadn't seen Secret in a minute so it was good to run into her. But the looks from the patrons, the guys I went with and especially the guy who thinks he's god's gift to WOCS, were all "who the fuck is that guy?".

But I get that all over: it's hard to walk into a stripclub, underground party, massage parlor or brothel in the tri-state area without someone knowing me. Only in the TS spot am I a big nobody.

The Boo comes from Black culture. Parents would give their toddlers endearing nick names, sometimes based on traits they displayed. Sometimes it might be from early words the toddler learned to use, like Boo Boo would mean they have to go to the bathroom. But the names were given out of love. Sometimes children would not know their formal name when entering kindergarten, and others might be called that name by their family their entire lives.

Anyway I say Boo is a substitute for the word 'baby', as it is a type of name parents might call their baby.

example: We had a kiki the other night.

Believe it or not, I believe that I invented or rather discovered the term ‘kiki’. In African American culture terms shift in meaning over time, which has it roots and African cultures.

Around 1993, we used to have this gay friend who came to the house a lot. He would tell us about all the drama at the clubs from the previous weekend. There was this notorious lesbian couple who were constantly involved in drama that he spoke of. Their names were Kiki and Dee Dee. He used their names so much, I stopped him one time and said something like; the names Kiki and Dee Dee sound like something that could be used to describe a lot of gay drama. We laughed and we began to say that “it was some Kiki and Dee Dee mess” when he was telling us another story. Or one of us would say, “it sounds like some Kiki and Dee Dee stuff”. Shortly after that he moved to NYC where he has been every since. We lost touch, but I know that he took his ‘Kiki and Dee Dee stuff’ with him. I’m sure he must have hung out in the NYC clubs, because he was young and used to hang out here a lot.

I started seeing the term ‘kiki’, when I started pulling up NYC ball videos, on YouTube, these many years later. I never forgot the term that me and our friend Charles, used to throw around. I never met Kiki or Dee Dee, but their relationship was scandalous. I was not completely sure what ‘kiki’ means today, so thanks for explaining it Allanah. But I believe that I know where it came from.

I was talking to some very old school friends tonite and the subject of "What is kiki?" came up. From what they said, it was originally "a laugh", but a very specific, cartoonish laugh ("kikikikikiki....") usually associated with someone getting read really well/badly. (I think this is supported by Allanahs "a kiki is when something is absurdly funny or very funny"). Then, later it meant any laugh, then any really good time.
