How do you add an avatar to your profile

I know that their are avatars that already in the system but how so you attach one to your profile from the outside. I've gone to a avatar site and downloaded an avatar to my machine. I then went into my profile and hit browse to add an avatar from my machine and then submit but nothing ever appears. Am I doing something wrong?

Check the size. I think when I had problems the avatar was too big.
