Sad, yes, but some of us have moved on. Others need to see them again.

I have, as a hobby, an interest in urban transit history. A couple of years ago, at a railway museum of which I am a member, I was riding on an old Perley Thomas streetcar from New Orleans. Built in the 1920s and operated through the 1970s in that great city, these streetcars had holes drilled into the brass handles on the seatbacks.

A young black couple, with two small children, were on the ride with me. The children kept poking their fingers into the holes on the seatbacks. Seeing that I was familiar with the equipment, the father asked me if I knew what the holes were for.

"You know about the Jim Crow laws?" and to my amazement, he shook his head in answer: "No". It's bad enough to have some memory of such things, but to have to explain them to someone that they would have so deeply affected is worse. Though the family was aware of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, they had no idea that these simple holes on the back of the seats were for the mounting of signs that the conductor moved about the car during the day that said "Whites Only" on one side and "Coloreds Only" on the other. Similar signs, often finely crafted and lettered in fancy script, were used in Dallas, Houston, Miami, and Atlanta.

It's a shameful time in America's history, but to erase it from the collective memory would be the greater sin.

I remember these clips from when I was a kid. I remember "Amos and Andy" when it was on TV. I loved that show. It didn't seem all that racist except for the character "lightning".

It is pretty sad and pathetic you know what else is sad that this post won't generate as much attention as the racist escort thread,I wish the same people whom fight for such an ridiculous issue would put fought the same effort for real issues dealing with race.

That's how it is

Nobody will look at real world issues but personal issues that have nothing to do with nothing

@michneo: FYI, that cartoon clip is 50+ years old. The people who produced them are dead and buried. I assume you are looking for retribution of some sort. What do you propose?

Well said. The cartoons were very offensive now that I'm older. When I was younger, I didnt see why they were offensive. Just one day, I remember those scenes being taken out or even the black maid on Tom and Jerry's voice changing in recent years (anyone catch that?)

It was ignorant and still is. Fact is, its funny to watch them now and know that society has taken steps to rise above that evil way of depicting those who are different. No one is looking for retribution, but lets not act like it didnt happen.

I wanted to be The Kingfish when I was a kid. He was cool.

It's tough to judge things like those cartoons by today's standards. Mindsets were completely different then.

I remember trips to Virginia Beach to visit relatives on the bus as a child in the early 60's. Once you hit the Virginia line on the way down the bus would stop. The white folks would go to the front and black folks to the back. On the way back everyone would move wherever they wanted when we crossed into West Virginia.

I remember when I was younger, some station down here used play Heckle and Jeckle cartoon.I never used watch because shit was boring, but now as I look back on those cartoons,I thinking "how could someone rebroadcast these ignorant stereotypes(this was the early to the mid eighties" Now I can't watch early Tom and Jerry cartoons because of the "auntie Jemama-like" maid that always yell "THOMAS"

The saddest thing is losing free speech and affirmative action, which is racism against whites. Time to grow up and be a big boy.Affirmative action for equality is like fucking for virginity.Deal with it you real racist.

Heckle and Jeckyl were pulled for violence long before folks got real concerned about the stereotypes they portrayed.(Damned Tipper Gore and her friends.) Blowin' shit up,stickin' firecrackers up cat's asses......... they were hardcore. Today they'd be voiced by Snoop and Ice-T and wearin' Crip blue.

Violence is the same reason you don't see Woody Woodpecker these days, that bird was a friggin' sociopath.

I miss Woody. He makes Itchy and Scratchy look tame.

You're dead on,SB. Things are going to get real nasty once this Presidential race gets ramped up. People are going to see and hear things they thought were dead and buried 45-50 years ago.

The smears against Obama are certainly amping up. The 'Morning Joe' show on MSNBC showed a FOX news banner under a Michelle Obama clip that referred to her as "Barack's baby mama." Very subtle, huh? The swiftboating attempts have begun already. I just hope that Obama's team handles the attacks more aggressively and effectively than Kerry's team did.
