This story has been floating around for a while and it's the stupidest idea I've heard. Even if it ever got passed, which I doubt (or it would be tied up in court for a long time) - how can you raise tax on one product and not another - and what is, "porn" ? Surely, Playboy is porn - then so is FHM ?

The fact is that porn producers as we know them (ie; like the US produced content you see on this site) would simply move their production elsewhere, or else, move their business elsewhere and continue to shoot in California. Nevada would seem the most likely choice although there are plenty of other states to choose from - or countries, like Costa Rica, who have the infrastructure.

California makes a lot of money from the porn industry and should welcome and support it. People do have less money at the moment and although may continue to buy porn, may be less of it, if more expensive. This cost would not be passed to the consumer (as content produced elsewhere would remain the same) so would be reduced by less productions, or lesser fees being paid = less money going back to the grassroots of performers, editors, cameramen, printers, designers, etc.

Stupid idea.
