Arrowsmith, Honkin' on Bobo. Before that, Meredith Le Vande, through the clouds.

'Arrowsmith', ecstatic? Did you write it deliberately in that way or is there a band waiting to be sued for copyright infringement? :)

Anyway, my favorite music styles are:

Salsa

Jazz

Merengue (some but definitely not all songs)

Dance Hall

Reggeaton (what goes for Merengue can also be said of Reggeaton)

Some ethnic kinds of music (Fado, Bhangra)

and Bachata.

I normally don't listen to other kinds of music but as always, some exceptions are invited to my harddrive as mp3.

LOL, no just typing faster than I was thinking! Aerosmith indeed. Biggest band to ever come out of Boston, you'd think I'd know better, but then I never really listened to them very much. I like this blues album of theirs, though.

And I like Steve Tyler's daughter. Ummm-hmmm. She can be my elf any time.

I love Miles, from Birth of the Cool up to Bitches Brew; that's a great album, but not half as good to my ear as his earlier work. My favorites are Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue.

Other jazz I really dig: Coltrane (Giant Steps!), Mingus, Errol Garner, Monk, Roland Kirk, Sun Ra (when I'm in the right mood), McCoy Tyner, so many others. My favorite era is 50s cool, though I also enjoy beebop and 60s avantgarde. Not so much for swing, but I do like Goodman and Duke. Jazz-rock fusion was an interesting experiment which for me got uninteresting quickly; rock is great, but it's too limited in scope for real jazz to happen.

Oh, and my current favorite contemporary jazz artist is Patricia Barber.

There is no doubt that Miles, Coltrane, and Monk are all outstanding. For any of you who enjoy the aforementioned greats, check out Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. You will not be disappointed.

Agreed.

Lee Morgan's Sidewinder is awesome.

Check out the hard-bop era. It's post-Bop, early to late 50's...
Melodic, soulful, funky, groove music with hardcore bop-influenced improvisation riding on top.

Flat out kicks ass.

Lee Morgan

Wayne Shorter

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers

Horace Silver

Bobby Timmons

Sonny Clark

Jimmy Smith

Hank Mobley

to name a few stellar contributors.

What, no Kenny G? :)

Jazz hit its creative high water mark between the end of WWII (Bird!) and the mid-60s (Trane!). Hard bop, cool, modal invention, Eastern and Middle Eastern influences (Trane and others got into Indian classical--sitars and all--10 years before George Harrison ever heard of a sitar)...all this was amazing. But it became too complex for most casual listeners (unlike swing era jazz) and too long for radio play, and this thing called Rock and Roll happened. So jazz lost out as popular music and rock took over.

Kenny G reminds me of this guy who used to advertise on late night TV. I can't remember his name but he played syrupy "music" on the Pan Pipes.

Maybe you remember him Ecstatic. I grew up in the Greater Boston area, and I am around your age.
I used to see the commercials late at night after a hard night of partying. Any bells ringing?

That's not all we share, by the way. We have very similar approaches and feelings toward TG's in general, and Venus in particular.

I met her on one of her rare trips to LA and fell in love with her. I had a twofer with her and Shy Lin, because Venus didn't want to hurt Shy Lin's feelings when I initially turned down the suggestion of a two girl session. I didn't want to dilute my time with Venus. It turned out to be a wonderfully memorable experience. Imagine getting your hands, then your feet massaged by two giggling, lovely Asian Tgirls in sheer lingerie, for starters. Venus gave me all I could have asked for, and Shy Lin was sweet and lovely to boot. Next time you talk to Venus tell her what a sweetheart she is (I know you will, but tell her for me too). And ask her to come to LA for a visit.

Quixote,

I believe you are referring to Zamfir, a man who referred to himself as the "Master of the Pan Flute." No doubt a truly notable distinction considering the overwhelming number of musicians attempting to specialize in playing that instrument. As a child, those commercials used to make me laugh all the time.

Not my style, but I have heard of some of those bands: Metallica of course, korn, deftones, foo fighters, sevendust, but none of the others. I'm a big fan of 60s acid rock (Jefferson Airplane--especially the incredible After Bathing at Baxter's, one of the greatest albums of all time--Hendrix, Led Zepplin), but later heavy metal et al isn't my cuppa.

By god you got it. Music of the gods.

I think of Pan, the goat-footed god, dancing through the mountains as Zamfir, "Master of the Pan Pipes", followed along playing his "music"!

Quinn is right: Zamfir. He is technically quite good, but how saccahrine can music get? My favorite use of such pipes is how Shakira uses Andean pipes as accents to her music, which gives it an edge that none of the Britney wannabes can approach (that and the Middle Eastern influence in her best work). But give me Natacha Atlas or Ofra Hazra for Arabic-flavored pop/rock.

I'll try to remember. It's pretty obvious that I love Venus, though I try not to run on about it overmuch. She is one girl I can truly call a friend, as well as the most gifted lover imaginable. Did she do her electric fingers thing with you? Where she runs her fingers along your body just so and shivers of delight just run through your body? I kid you not.

The second time I saw her she was traveling with another Thai girl, Sabrina I think, and tried to talk me into a threesome, but I only wanted her, and fell back on not having the extra $ to spend. That was an incredible day. I don't want to go into details here, but if you're interested, I did post a review on SER about a year and a half ago. I'll just say that the hour turned into four, effectively two sessions in one; I spent a couple of hours helping her with her laptop and she thanked me in a BIG way. She is a very special lady, one of the few truly exceptional escorts on the scene.

OK, enough....I've got to get back to NYC soon!

Ecstatic
07-21-2005, 08:02 PM
If you like Beefheart, do you also like Zappa? He's a long time fave of mine, especially apostrophe (*), We're Only in It for the Money, and Freak Out.

Right now I'm listening to Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter, "Oh My Girl" - great album.

Ecstatic
07-21-2005, 08:50 PM
Wow, I haven't heard that album since...1968...well, probably not since 1971 or so, but I do remember it.

Lately I've been on a kick rediscovering great bands from the 60s: The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Dr Strangely Strange, Tir Na Nog, Procol Harum, and a number of others.

What kind of music do you play? What instrument? I play acoustic guitar and harmonica just for myself and the cats, to idle away a few hours now and then, but I'd never play in public!

Ecstatic
07-21-2005, 09:07 PM
Sounds like you've developed your own sound. I've heard a lot of guitarists who can sound just like Hendrix or Clapton or whoever, but who haven't developed any style of their own. A friend of mine who plays in a 60s-rock/blues jam band has cultivated his own style, and I think that makes a world of difference.

Ecstatic
07-21-2005, 09:49 PM
Well, technically you lost me there (though I'm sure my friend would know exactly what you're describing). I'd love to hear your band someday. Ever play the Boston area?

Anyway, we may have gone down a bit of cul-de-sac here, but with all the drama on the board of late, I'm glad to be talking music for a change!

FWIW, I play a Suzuki 6-string classical guitar, a real nice instrument my folks got for me 35 years ago. My wife has a Yamaha 12-string and a rare Gibson 6-string classical (she's an actual musician, unlike me), but she prefers my Suzuki big time over the Gibson! I guess Gibson made great electric and solid body guitars, but not so much classical.

Ecstatic
07-21-2005, 10:55 PM
There are certain great guitars which are made for a limited time, then become collector's items. I've heard of the Travis Bean guitars. Another, on the acoustic side, is the Gibson J45 (Donovan, for instance, used a J45 exclusively on all his 60s material, up until someone stole it from his dressing room ca. 1971). But the Gibson my wife bought, unfortunately, is only a so-so guitar; they apparently only made it for 3 years, but it's no collector's item, lol.

Through The Past Darkly was another good 'old' Stones album. I think it was released just after Brian Jones' death as it had a memorial verse on it.
Personally I like listening to Meat Loaf, Texas, Capercaillie, Bond, Vanessa Mae, Cher. When I was doing my Open University degree, I used to revise for exams with Meat Loaf going at full blast. I'm always amazed at the amount of work I could get done when surrounded by a wall of noise. It also gave the neighbours a treat to hear a great rock band. I also listen to a lot a film and theatre soundtracks. Quite a variety. :D

Thats cool. My dream guitar, the guitar that i am convinced will solve all of my sound/tone issues i have, is the "Travis Bean" guitars. Unfortunately they are a very coveted, collectible guitar because they only made them from 1974-1978. They were made by hand out of the garage of 2 people by the name of Travis Bean, and Gary Kramer. Travis Bean was a motorcyle mechanic in souther California who thought that aluminum would be a great idea for material to make guitars out of. The guitar is so well built and solid, and had a 1 piece aluminum neck that runs the lenght of the body wich is made of solid heavy koa wood. The guitar was very popular and was used by many famous musicians, including the bassist of Rolling Stones, Keith Levine ( of Public Image Limited fame, wich i might add is one of the biggest influences on my playing), and Gerry Garcia, just to name a few.
On our last US tour this past Feb/March, i was in Hollywood at the guitar center and they actually had one in the back room, hidden from the rest of the store, and it was going for almost 3,000$!! I almost fucking cried and slit my wrists right then and there,, hahaha

of course they stopped making them, and Gary Kramer went on to start Kramer guitars, and just never made anything even close to the Travis Bean.

That description of the guitar may be the hottest thing I've read on this forum so far

I'm a journeyman when it comes to music. I say that because I always liked to be turned onto something new, and my tastes have really changed through the years. I also feel like I'm only scratching the surface as to what's out there as I was raised in the ilk of Top 40.

I'll give anything a chance, although I prefer things softer and more acoustic.

Stuff I like include 12 Stones, AC/DC, Fuel (with the old lead), Fort Minor, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Live, Queen, RHCP, and Tom Petty.

I find myself right now looking to yesteryear for music these days.

Wow seems like the metal crowd is in the minority on this forum. Oh well, while I like all the various forms of rock I do have some favs from each sub-genre. Tool is my all time favorite band, and I follow lead singer Maynard to his side ventures of 'A Perfect Circle' and 'Pucifer'. Now on with the list lol: Fear Factory, In Flames, Tvangeste, Type O Negative, Zombie Girl, Wumpscut, old Alice in Chains,nArctic Monkeys, Deftones, Atreyu, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Beck, Bush, Children Of Bodom, Cradle Of Filth, Lacuna Coil, Dead Can Dance, Dethklok, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Dimmu Borgir, Disturbed, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Dresden Dolls, Duran Duran, Enslavement of Beauty, God Is An Astronaut, Godhead, Gothminister, Green Day, Hanzel Und Gretyl, The Killers, Killswitch Engage, old Korn, LeStat, Madder Mortem, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, KMFDM, Ministry, The Misfits, Mudvayne, Morbid Angel, Muse, Mushroomhead, Nirvana, NiN, old Pantera, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, The Project Hate, Professional Murder Music, Smashing Pumpkins, System Of A Down, Skinny Puppy, Sneaker Pimps, Sublime, Switchblade Symphony, Suicidal Tendencies, Taproot, Tiamat, Violent Femmes, Android Lust, Arzt + Pfusch, and Graveworm. Phew that's about most of the bands that are on my daily playlist I play although there's a lot of other obscure bands that I like. Don't get into too many of the newer bands that have emerged since 2000 though.

Bollywood songs from the 70's and 80's. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Alka Yagnik, Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. They are the only ones I want to hear.

Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Hard Rock, Metal...some blues as well, as long as it rocks with guitars, bass and drums...not much into synth stuff like progressive rock...

Jazz, Fusion, Classic, Blues, Heavy/Thrash/Prog/Death Metal is what I´m listening to. I also love Prog Rock, especially older bands like Camel, Colosseum (II), King Crimson, YES, Rush, Guadalquivir etc.

My fav. artists in Jazz are: Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Oliver Nelson, Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey (and the Jazz Messengers), Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ray Drummond, Wayne Shorter, Thelonius Monk, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson.
It´s pretty much a mixture of Free Jazz and Bebop.

Here are some of my fav Fusion artists and bands: Weather Report, Allan Holdsworth, The Mahavishnu Orchestra (and everything by John McLaughlin), Al Di Meola, Billy Cobham, The Zawinul Syndicate, Chick Corea (Return to Forever and Elektric Band), Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech, Cosmosquad, Greg Howe, Jaco Pastorius, Shawn Lane, Jonas Hellborg, Richard Bona, M.C.M (with Alex Masi and Randy Coven), Mike Stern, Niacin (with Dennis Chambers and Billy Sheehan), Victor Biglione, Ricardo Silveira, Sixun, UZEB, Vital Information and many more.
I doubt you know these bands and artists.

When it comes to Metal, I´m only listening to the old stuff because everything has already been done better. There are outstanding bands today but most of them suck. We live in weird times where kids think that Linkin Park is a Metal band.
I´ll mix my favourite bands from various Metal styles: Atheist, Nocturnus, Coroner, Destruction, Cynic, Death, Watchtower, Vitalij Kuprij, Yngwie Malmsteen, Monstrosity, Deicide, Massacra, Agressor, Pestilence, Sadus, Cloven Hoof, Judas Priest, Dark Lord, Forbidden, Heathen, Paradox, Impellitteri, Masi, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Liege Lord, Riot, Pokolgep, Scanner, Slauter Xtroyes, Vicious Rumours, Artillery, Toxik, old Slayer, Sacrifice, Vio-lence, Whiplash, Artension, old Fates Warning, old Iron Maiden, Symphony X, Liquid Tension Experiment (side project of John Petrucci from Dream Theater), The Armada, Cacophony, Space Odyssey and many more.

I also love instrumental albums by guitar virtuosos. There´s plenty of them, so I won´t bother name them now. Another music I adore are soundtracks by Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Vangelis, Stanley Myers, Bernard Hermann and stuff like that.

I´m also a Hard Rock lover and to name a few: Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Gary Moore and Thin Lizzy, Rainbow and the good old Van Halen shit.

Yeah, I´m a music fanatic and would probably kill myself if someone takes it away from me.

Miles Davis, especially during rush hour traffic
Replying to this four years late, but I feel ya. Listening to Kind Of Blue or Sketches of Spain really calms the nerves!
