I use IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) to resize my images. It is an easy program to use and I like it.

The best program is Photoshop, hands down, but it's an expensive program if you don't have it (I've been upgrading since v. 3.0 back in 1994, so I always get the upgrade price). Maybe you can get a deal on an educational purchase?

OK, here's some techy stuff which may be helpful if you're interested:

Photoshop has an excellent feature called Save for Web which gives you all sorts of control over the quality of a jpeg. But without getting into it too deeply, a couple of things to look out for:

1) when you resize an image, be sure to "constrain proportions" which means you keep the aspect ratio of height and width uniform: that is, you don't distort the image by changing the height more than you do the width but you change them both the same percentage.

2) an optimal size for the web is 800 pixels high, which will display nicely on almost everybody's monitor. You can save bigger, but the filesize goes up a lot.

3) only save a jpeg once if possible because it's a "lossy" format: that means everytime you save the image, you lose some image quality (due to how the image is processed, very technical).

4) Save at a "high" setting (6-7 on a scale of 10) rather than a "max" setting or a "medium" setting: max will not perceptibly improve the image quality but it can double or triple the filesize; however, less than the high (or mid-high) and the file quality drops a lot with little filesize advantage. In Photoshop, I find that usually between 60 and 70 is the optimal setting.

5) after you resize the image, sharpen it a bit because you will have lost some "focus" or "sharpness"; in Photoshop, use Unsharp Mask, and the equivalent in any other program.

I don't know IrfanView personally, but I do know bigguy's photo quality, so I'm sure that's a fine suggestion. PaintShop Pro is another good inexpensive alternative to Photoshop.

In any event, great photos!

Yeah, it takes a while to get it to work like you want. Hell, I've been using it for 12 years and I'm still learning, totally. But if you have it, it is the best program out there. And the principles apply to any program, really. If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM me if you like.

What kind of camera are you using?

1) when you resize an image, be sure to "constrain proportions" which means you keep the aspect ratio of height and width uniform: that is, you don't distort the image by changing the height more than you do the width but you change them both the same percentage.
Ifranview uses a Lanczos resizing method, which actually produces better quality results than Photoshop's simple Hermite "compare, reproduce, and blur" technique. The Lanczos filter actually reproduces the image in its entirety, duplicating like-color pixels, then adjusting brightness and contrast by comparing to surrounding areas. Photoshop just straight-out resizes the image, then runs a 3 pixel gausan blur over the image.

3) only save a jpeg once if possible because it's a "lossy" format: that means everytime you save the image, you lose some image quality (due to how the image is processed, very technical).
Very technical, but obvioulsy misunderstood. In most image manipulation programs, once resized, a picture becomes a bitmap image until it's saved, which means, so long as you DO resize it, saving the resulting file as a JPEG will not lose quality from the original JPEG file, since it's been reprocessed.

5) after you resize the image, sharpen it a bit because you will have lost some "focus" or "sharpness"; in Photoshop, use Unsharp Mask, and the equivalent in any other program.
That's because photoshop isn't the best program to resize photos in. Once you run the Unsharp Mask filter, your image will show artifacting.

I use both Ifranview and Photoshop, although, I've given up on photoshop to do image resizing a long time ago. Besides, Ifranview is so easy to use, and doubles as a great way to browse though my massive collection of porn movies and pics.
