REEDSBURG, Wis. (AP) - After what happened last week, elementary-school officials in Reedsburg won't be encouraging kids to dress as members of the opposite gender.

Wacky Week is an annual tradition at Pineview Elementary when kids are encouraged to dress in costume. The theme Friday was to dress as a senior citizen or as the opposite sex.

A Milwaukee-based radio network called Voice of Christian Youth America criticized the dress-up day, accusing the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.

Its broadcast on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin prompted angry calls to the school and the Reedsburg School District.

Principal Tammy Hayes says the response surprised her. She says she didn't receive any objections beforehand, and the event was just meant to be fun.

She estimates about 40% of the student body dressed up Friday -- half portrayed senior citizens and half dressed as the opposite sex.
