Buying an Apartment in New York City

Going to be purchasing an apt in NYC within the next couple of months. Just a nice place to chill when I visit and perhaps share with friends as well. I have really been digging Tribecca and the Nolita scene the last few visits but was interested in what you folks think. What part of the city do you feel would be most suitable for me buy in?

I am mid thirties fairly liberal on social issues, fiscally conservative and pretty diverse when it comes to most things.
