You can also buy a "student" version of Word for about $49. They don't ask for ID just make you swear that you are a student. And actually since Jessica IS a student I think we didnt' even have to lie...

Just to emphasize -- OpenOffice.org has everything anyone needs. Open source, free for all, one simple download, works almost entirely just like the whole MS Office suite. I've been using it for months, just had my girlfriend download & install it herself today, perfectly happy with it.

MS isn't making MSOffice a major prob with their authenticity probe. So any programs you get may or may not be okay with their updates. Just remember that if you take something that is considered "illegal" you run the risk of built in viruses or spyware. Just my two cents.

If you just need a wordprocessor program
Another free alternative would be Abiword

Go with openoffice. It works great, can read MS formats, is 100% free and legal, and now it can even read those new MS office formats. Did I mention that it is free?

I have my resume in an Internet Explorer file with that Word icon next to it and it's real easy to send it electronically to potential employers via upload or email. The problem is, since my MSFT free trial period has expired, I'm blocked from going into the doc to make changes. I don't want to use a non-MSFT platform and I'm semi-retarded when it comes to computers. How can I unfreeze the template without doing anything too dramatic?

should I just buy the freakin Word package?

You can download the whole package totally gratis from any number of torrent sites, or even from your own file-sharing software like Limwire or Shareaza, if you roll that way.

Get over that. Get OpenOffice, problem permanently solved in 5 minutes.

WordPerfect 5.1.

I'm working with 8.0 (I got a copy of 11.0 but it sucked almost as heavily as MSWord).

People are as addicted to MSWord as they are to their damned useless cell phones. :x

While most intelligent species are using PDF documents online, I've run into a couple that will only open in MSWord. Shame they won't be getting my biz.

Just a quickie about openoffice, I know it can read microsoft formats, but is the reverse true, or do I have to save documents etc in the right format on openoffice?

It troubles me slightly, because I'm running openoffice at home at when I have assignments for Uni I email them to myself and print them out there.

Svejk: In Open Office preferences you can set the format your documents will saved in. Just choose .doc and you should be good to go.

You can "Save As" any of the normal Microsoft formats.
