View Full Version : To '80's Music Fans: Which band today ...

Since there is a core of '80's new wave/techno pop/punk genre fans here, I have a question for y'all: Which current band today (still intact) best embodies that sound ... that look, that spirit, that mystique, that style, et all ??? Is there an Echo and the Bunnymen out there that I am not aware of? Are there any New Orders or OMDs also?

For me, the following band's sound comes very close:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCkSMwaGGc

Please post names or links of your favs. I'm really interested in listening to new sounds that emulate that '80's sound ... I want and need new meat! :)

And, no, I don't mean, want, or need the Guns and Roses sound. Yech!

Maroon 5 has an 80's vibe and on this song the lead singer Adam Levine has a young Sting type vocal ...

I was a metal fan in the 80's, am now, and will always be. Many of the old geezers are still rockin'. In the last couple of years, I've bought great DVD performances of Heaven And Hell(Black Sabbath w/Dio), Motorhead, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. I went to go see Heaven And Hell live when they were in LA and they were almost as good as when I saw them during the Mob Rules Tour back in 1981.

As far as newer, but definitely not new, bands go, I like Black Label Society and Down.

Hate to disagree X, but the lead singer for Maroon 5 is still waiting for his balls to drop IMO.

Real, try The Killers

Oli, did you click my link? That's the band I picked, even down to that specific song as my example sans the remixing that yours has. But -- BUT -- you, Francis, and possibly Xrey, are on the same page as to sensing what I am looking for. :)

Didn't hit the link Real, sorryhttp://i20.tinypic.com/dop9bq.jpg...the remixes by Jacques Lu Cont are great. BTW, the Killers are a much better live band than Echo ever was. Saw Echo 3 times, never sounded all that great. Saw the Killers last year and they rocked.

OK, here is a bunch:

The Killers (I love the way Realgirls4me had to provide a link, and didn't even name that band, as though everyone hasn't heard of the Killers!)

Some (but not all) LCD Soundsystem

The Faint

The Bravery (but they are disgusting)

Obviously No Doubt (check their album Rock Steady)

The Strokes second album, Room On Fire

Plug In City, The Presets & Cut Copy (most of the bands on Modular)

To be honest, that whole New Wave revival thing was over like 2 years ago; it's just annoying now.

New Wave bands (if you're American) still going AFAIK: Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Cure, and The Police.

Bands part of the New Wave revival:
Franz Ferdinand - Take me out

Kaiser Chiefs - Everything Is Average Nowadays

Uh, duuuuh. Thanks for your contribution ... I think.

How can you assume "everyone" has heard of the Killers and thereby knows who they are, what they look like, and most importantly -- know their sound. And why did I have to name the band? Aren't you simply splitting hairs about having to hit a link? The reason I linked it was so others could not only immediately see and hear their stuff, but also so they could follow up and contribute links of their own, and most here did just that.

Rogers: Why would you want to go out and puke? Got something against music known to have verse, chorus, and "hook", not to mention catchy melodies with discernable lyrics which one can actually hum? Got many Guns and Roses tunes you can do that to?

Oh, I guess the Killers are more well known in Australia.

Speaking of the Killers, it's weird how they changed their sound on the second album.

Because music with electronic beeps and boops reminds me too much of Kraftwerk.

I'm not a fan of Guns and Roses, Realgirls4me, but because you asked:
Guns.N.Roses-Sweet Child O'Mine

Guns N Roses Paradise City

I'll also throw in "November Rain", largely because of the stunning Stephanie:

Probably the Bouncing Souls. I don't know if they technically fit the category but you can hear their influences coming through in their music.

Most 80's music was uninteresting, bland, over-hyped etc, but there was some different stuff about. Try these for starters:

Wire- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyTQ6Iw7MEA&feature=related
Propaganda- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYWTgM-z_nI&feature=related
Magazine-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9MbXEJwcec
Siouxsie And The Banshees- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaOIdIQ88n4

Wire was an interesting band. Started out as straight-up punk in the mid-70's.(Maybe the first "Queercore" band?) and on into electronica in the early 80's.

The Banshees I never got,but a lot of my friends loved them. I was into the Psych Furs and 2-Tone Ska by then.

I know I've got something by Magazine around here somewhere, but I haven't listened to it in 20 years.

The same with Propaganda. They were on/distributed Enigma for a short while,I believe? I used to get samplers from that label.

The best I can come up with is: Big Country (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Si4oGXB79E)

but you could also check out:
Sisters Of Mercy (Temple of Love feat. Ofra Haza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANAf7xfipNI))
The Mission (Tower Of Strength (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYiK2pCPeXU))
Fields Of The Nephilim
The Sound (a bit like Joy Division, but more positive)
Killing Joke
(early) Simple Minds
New Model Army
Cabaret Voltaire
The God Machine (early 90's band, but with a great sound)

Some of my favorite 80s bands that started then would be The Police, U2, G&R, Metallica, Berlin. But other of my fave 80s bands started before such as Rush (my all time fave band), Scorpions, Heart, Ozzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Jefferson Starship, ZZ Top, Judas Priest, Van Halen and others I can't think of now.
